Match report The final game of the 2006 season saw Thatcham head south to take on an Odiham and Greywell side in need of a win to ensure their safety from relegation.

With so much at stake, Odiham were in need of a strong start after being inserted by Thatcham skipper Perry Moore on a bright afternoon. Feeling the pressure, the Odiham batsmen endured a difficult start, with fine bowling from Tim Mahoney (3-38) and Jamie Bishop (2-23), together with some injudicious strokes reducing the home side to 49-5.

Needing a big partnership to get back into the game, home batsman A. Bawa set about rebuilding the innings and found valuable support from the Odiham lower order. As they began to gain confidence, the scoreboard started to race along as the Thatcham bowlers, hampered by an injury to Bishop, struggled to maintain control. Bawa, riding his luck, played some excellent shots and helped in particular by McGaughrin, Odiham reached a very competitive 234-7 off 52 overs, Bawa battling through for a fine 108 no.

Despite the challenging total posted by the home side, Thatcham set about chasing the win in confident manner, Cottingham and Gavin McDonald adding 20 quick runs before Cotty was trapped lbw by left-armer Thomas. McDonald continued batting beautifully and in partnership with no.3 Chris Barnes, the pair took the game away from an increasingly anxious Odiham side, adding 123 together until Barnes departed stumped for 41.

Any hopes the home side had of getting back into the game were dashed by a quick 30 from Paul Jenkins and McDonald’s dominant batting, as he showed a wide range of strokes, dispatching the home bowlers to all parts. Odiham rotated their bowlers in vain and despite a tidy spell from C. Hakakahn, Thatcham wrapped up a convincing 7 wicket victory in the 43rd over, McDonald guiding Thatcham home with a fantastic unbeaten 141.

This was an excellent victory, some great batting and great banter ending a very enjoyable league season for a Thatcham side, who’ve shown real spirit and fight in a competitive division.
