Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v Datchet III on Sat 20 May 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 125 runs

Match report On an overcast and wet day, Thatcham won the toss and decided to bat first, in the hope that the outfield may dry out by the second innings and allow them to bowl with a dry and hard ball. Openers Malcolm Bloor and Bob Gadsden strode to the crease with the difficult task of batting on an understandably damp pitch. The start was a steady one, with few big shots played as the ball wasn't coming on to the bat and the strong wind exaggerating any swing the bowlers were getting. The fifty was brought up in the 15th over without loss, the Datchet opening bowling pair of Bellman and Boardman having bowled well in the conditions without real reward.

The pair of Bloor and Gadsden continued with steady progress until the 23rd over when, with the score on 77, the Datchet skipper Bellman got one to seem back from wide of the off stump, forcing a late shot from Gadsden ending in the batsman being bowled off his inside edge. This bought Chris Bird to the wicket, a man more used to bowling for Thatcham's 1st XI, Chris was making his first appearance of the year following shoulder surgery in the off season. Bird and Bloor continued the steady progress running well and playing a few more expansive shots, sadly falling just short of a 50 partnership when Bird was caught for 19 with the score on 125 in the 35th over. With the middle order of Steve Bartholomew, Bill Fry and Liam Redmond all missing out and the end of the innings approaching, Malcolm Bloor had 2 targets in mind... Pushing the total to over 200 and his personal total into 3 figures. Nathan Redmond, batting at 7, played some aggressive strokes including a towering 6 well over the long off boundary, but fell for an exciting 15. The Thatcham skipper, Gavin Ansell, joined Bloor with only 2 overs to go, keen to feed the strike to the opening batsman, something he had been starved of over the last 10 overs. The Thatcham innings closed on 190-6 from their 52 overs, Malcolm Bloor scoring an impressive and intelligent 88 not out. The pick of the Datchet bowlers was I. Thompson finishing with 3-37 from his 10 overs.

With the weather much improved from the early part of the afternoon, Thatcham took to the field for the Datchet innings. With a strong side wind, the Thatcham opening bowlers of Nathan Redmond and Simon Chapple struggled with their line and length during the first 5 overs, giving Datchet a quick start of 21 for no wicket. Not having too many runs to play with, the Thatcham skipper brought himself on to bowl, replacing Chapple. His first 2 overs were maidens, having stuck to the teams plan to bowl straight and full on the slow wicket. Nathan Redmond continued from the other end, finding a better line and using the cross wind to bowl some testing in-swingers. The Datchet run rate began to slow, though the opening pair looked solid, R.Williams looking particularly comfortable. The first wicket fell in the 10th over, Ansell trapping M.Raja in front L.B.W. for 2 with the Datchet score on 33. Ansell struck again in his next over, bowling the other opening Williams for 32. With Williams gone, Datchet were unable to offer much resistance, so much so that in Nathan Redmond's 7th and last (due to ECB fast bowling directives) over, he managed a double wicket maiden, to leave him with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 16. Nathan was replaced by his brother Liam who was on the mark from the word go and together with Ansell, they took the final 6 Datchet wickets in just 6 overs. Liam Redmond, not to be out done by his brother, also bowled a double wicket maiden to finished with figures of 3 wickets for 3 runs from 3 overs. Ansell took the last Datchet wicket to finish with 5 wickets for 26 runs from his 8 overs, meaning Datchet were all out for 65 in 20 overs.

This comprehensive win for Thatcham leaves the side at the top of Division 6B of the Thames Valley League, on 45 points from the 50 possible after 2 weeks of the season. They are 13 points clear of second place Kew 3's and with the top 2 teams playing each other next week, Thatcham will be keen to stretch their early lead as much as possible.
