Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v Teddington Town II on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 12 runs

Match report On a glorious and hot day, Thatcham Town 3rd XI played Teddington Town 2nd XI at the Henwick Sportsground. With it being the hottest day of the year so far, both captains were keen to win the toss and bat, to avoid fielding for 52 overs during the hottest part of the day. Sadly the Teddington Town skipper won the toss and dually elected to bat.

Thatcham took the field and opened up the bowling with the medium pace of brothers, Nathan and Liam Redmond, both of whom found their line and length from the word go. Nathan, restricted by ECB bowling regulations, got through his 7 over spell without a wicket, but was unlucky to do so having bowled tightly and beaten the edge numerous times. Liam continued from the other end, bowling 12 over straight through, no mean feat in itself considering the heat. He was unlucky, having a couple of close shouts for L.B.W. turned down, but managed to get one go his way removing one of the Teddington openers.

Left arm spinner, John Williams was brought on to replace Nathan Redmond, and immediately had the batsmen in trouble. At this early stage of the season though, without the match practice he'd of liked, Williams did pitch the odd ball a little short, which on a slow but true wicket was meat and drink to the batsmen. The Thatcham skipper, Gavin Ansell, replaced Liam Redmond after his long spell and although 2 chances in his first over just evaded the field, he struggled for accuracy and went for 28 runs in his 4 overs as the Teddington batsmen opened their shoulders. Williams however was finding greater success at the other end, steadily taking wickets, leaving him with fine figures of 5-63 from his 16 over spell. Liam Redmond came back and bowled well, but needed replacing after 3 overs, exhausted from his previous long spell and fielding in the heat. Brother Nathan bowled out that end to finish with superb figures of 3-21 from his 13.1 overs. The Teddington innings closed on 171 all out.

With the temperature cooling a little, and a strong batting line up, Thatcham were confident they could knock off the runs. With the stalwarts of Paul Sharp and Bob Gadsden taking to the crease, a steady start was expected. Teddington struck with their first ball, Sharp mistiming his shot to be caught at square leg off the back of his bat. The in form Malcolm Bloor cam in at three and immediately attacked the less than threatening bowling. Gadsden got to 4, before an indecisive pull shot saw him caught at mid-wicket. This was not the start Thatcham had hope for, but batting all the way down, they were still confident they could reach the target. Andy Bayliss cam in at for and, playing with a very straight bat, looked solid and was able to score comfortably. With the experience of Bloor at the other end, these 2 looked like putting together a decent partnership. That was until Bloor got a good one that bounced and came back into the left hander, which sadly found his inside edge, sending the ball into his off-peg.This brought in Martin Keep at 5, who hit some powerful shots into the on-side, enjoying the Teddington bowling. Again the pair looked set, before Bayliss uncharacteristically played around one and was bowled for 12. This was becoming a trend, the Thatcham batsmen playing unnecessarily aggressive shots and getting out. Steve Bartholomew at 6 and Harry Waters at 7 both looked good, but again fell trying to play to the on-side for 7 and 13 runs respectively. John Williams came in at 8, only to see Keep hole out to long on a few balls later, scoring a much needed 37. John, like several of his team mates was playing far more aggressively than needed, and shortly after being joined by the skipper Ansell, he too perished, caught at mid-off. Nathan Redmond came to the crease at 10 and played solidly, scoring sensibly and not giving the Teddington bowlers any chances. Ansell was out for 1, getting a leading edge to a leg glance, meaning the brothers Liam and Nathan were once again joined in action. With the Thatcham 10 & 11 pair, more used to batting much further up the order, the target total was still possible, but the Thatcham innings closed 13 runs short on 159 as Liam Redmond was bowled for 8, leaving Nathan not out on 15. Thatcham lose by 12 runs.

With a strong batting side failing to knock off what was only a par total, the whole team will need to improve next week as they travel to Kidmore End 3's. Thatcham having lost their lead in TVL 6B, they will be keen to come back with a strong win, in the hope of taking back the promotion place.
