Kidmore End III v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday on Sat 10 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report It was another blistering day as Thatcham Town 3rd XI travelled to the picturesque Kidmore End secondary ground at Warborough. The toss was won by the home skipper who decided to bat first, unsurprisingly given the heat and 5 of his players were running late.

Though the Thatcham Town team took the field at 1.30 as scheduled, it was not until 1.43 that the Kidmore End batsmen and umpires took the field. Nick Voller took the first over for Thatcham and struck with his 4th ball, bowling the opener S. Payne for a duck. The number three, S. Halideen, having taken his time to reach the crease, drove his first ball powerfully for 4, but saw his stumps split in the second over from Nathan Redmond, without adding to his total, the score now 6-2.

Thatcham's tails were now up and Nick Voller starting his second over, traps the other Kidmore End opener (L. Rajmohon) L.B.W. without scoring. These early wickets had brought S. Abdul and R Shakoor to the crease for Kidmore End, both of which looked more secure than the top 3, playing defensively and waiting for the bad ball. They could only add a partnership of 28 however, as in his sixth over, Voller sent Shakoor's off stump cart wheeling for 9 to have Kidmore End 35-4. This though brought Z. Razik to the crease, who would prove to be a more than capable batsman and the class of the Kidmore End line up. Nathan Redmond's opening spell netted him good figured of 7-1-1-20. Redmond was replaced by the Thatcham Skipper, Gavin Ansell, who in partnership with Voller looked to keep things tight as the Kidmore End middle order looked to play aggressively.

The pair of Abdul and Razik put on 44 for the 5th wicket before Voller bagged his forth, again sending the off stump out of the ground when bowling Abdul for 25. The number 7 only lasted 2 balls when Voller trapped R. Hullock L.B.W. for a duck and Voller's 5th wicket, that double wicket maiden taking the score to 79-6. In the 23rd over, Voller bagged his 6th wicket, bowling I. Hatch for another Kidmore End duck. Nathan Redmond was eligible to bowl again after 28 overs, so Ansell brought himself off, disappointed not to take a wicket and finishing with figures of 7-1-0-30.

Razik was looking strong for Kidmore, doing whatever he could to keep the strike and protect his lower order partner, D. Field. Thatcham tried all they could but were unable to shift either batsman as they built a healthy partnership, with Razik hogging the strike and playing some excellent shots. With Voller tiring and the need to mix things up, Voller was brought off to be replaced by Liam Redmond, leaving Voller with excellent figures of 16-3-6-54. Brothers Liam and Nathan toiled away in the afternoon sun, and both bowled very well, wrapping up the Kidmore End innings at 159 all out. Razik stranded on 89 not out. Nathan finished with match figures of 12.4-2-2-38, while brother Liam had figures of 4-0-19-1. Praise was also deserved by the Kidmore End number 10, D. Field, though only scoring 3 runs, his partnership of 62 with Razik for the 9th wicket some him play with a resolute defence, and played his part in what looked like a defendable total.

After the break, the Thatcham opener's of Paul Sharp and Bob Gadsden took the field. With the Kidmore End innings ending in their 40th over, it meant that Thatcham Town only needed to score 2.67 runs per over, in their innings of 60 overs to win. This meant Sharp and Gadsden could bat watchfully, as there had started to be some uneven bounce out there. The score quickly moved on to 21, thanks in no small part to 13 extras from Kidmore, S.Halideen struggling to keep his front foot behind the popping crease. Gadsden fell in the 5th over though, caught in the covers for 7. Martin Keep came in at three, and in his usual style, looked to get after the bowling from the word go. There was no need though, as the extra's column was being rapidly filled. At the other end, Sharp was playing with more caution, pushing 1's and 2's. It was with the score on 39 that Halideen managed to bowl an unplayable delivery, with good pace he pitched one short, sadly for the batsman though it did not get up at bowled Keep's middle stump for only 4 runs.

Liam Redmond joined the opener and immediately looked at ease against the Kidmore End attack, playing a couple of powerful pull shots for 4. The Thatcham pair took the total up to 61, when the biggest controversy of the day happened. The other Kidmore End bowler Hatch ran in as if to bowl, but carried through his action to deliberately throw the ball onto the non-strikers stumps. Seeing that Liam Redmond was out of his ground, the bowler appealed. The umpire gave the bowler time to consider his appeal, but the appeal stood so Redmond was given out, run out for 13 with the score on 61-3. Dave Taylor joining Sharp, both of whom batted in a similar style to each other, pushing 1's and 2's, rather than looking for 4's and 6's. The pair added another 18 runs before both batsmen fell with the score on 79, Sharp was bowled for 17 and Taylor caught for 8. This meant the young pairing of Nathan Redmond at 6 and Steve Bartholomew at 7 were together and with the score on 79-5, and the memory of last weeks loss, Thatcham were a little nervous. Both Redmond and Bartholomew looked to be positive though, scoring 4's and running well between the wickets to take the total past three figures on to 107. Bartholomew then was out in a freakish way, facing the medium pace of S. Payne, he got a bottom edge, riffling the ball between the keepers feet standing up to the stumps. With the ball not touching the ground, all that was left was for the Kidmore End keeper to transfer the ball to hand and Bartholomew was out, unluckily for what looked a good 8.

Nick Voller then came to the crease and looked determined not to get out at all costs, leaving Nathan Redmond to play the attacking roll, which he fulfilled with ease, driving fiercely back past the bowlers on many occasions, they took the score towards the winning post and with less than 20 runs to win, Voller started to play a few shots, taking his total 15 and the Thatcham score to 154. Needing 6 to win, but 8 for his fifty, Redmond needed 2 lusty blows to reach 50 for the first time this season. He took 1 at the end of an over to have the strike in the following over, in the hope of passing the milestone. He hit a powerful straight drive, nearly decapitating his batting partner, getting the ball to the boundary, to tie the scores on 159 and take his personal total to 47. The next ball was a dot, and the following should also have been, but the Kidmore End keeper could not hold on to the ball, letting it through his legs. Rather than take any chances, the batsmen ran through for the bye to win the game by 4 wickets.

This was a return to winning ways for the Thatcham Town 3rd team, scoring 20 points for this win batting second. They remain 3rd in the league though, as top team Kew 3's score 25 to extend their lead to 9 points over Datchet 3's on 80 in second. Thatcham Town 3's are also on 80, but lay third by virtue of having fewer wins. Next week sees Thatcham Town 3's play host to Chiswick & Latymer 4's at Henwick Sportsground. With Chiswick yet to record a win, Thatcham will look to gain ground on Kew at the top of the table.
