Burnham III v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 43 runs

Match report Thatcham Town 3's travelled to Burnham on Saturday. On a warm and muggy afternoon, Thatcham won the toss and decided to bat first.

Thatcham opened with Paul Sharp and Mick Stone. Both men started off steadily, scoring 24 from the first 9 overs. It was at this point that the Burnham skipper, Aubrey Bryant, brought himself on to bowl. He varied his pace, swung it both ways and got a few quicker balls to bounce sharply. The opening batsmen found the bowling challenging, but took the score steadily to 43 in the 17th over when Stone was bowled for 7. Simon Heaver came in at three and also struggled against the excellent bowling of Bryant, wearing a sharp bouncer in the chest, leading to him being bowled for 5.

Young Louis Appella came in at 4 and looked to be handling the bowling well, but couldn't seem to get the ball away. He too was bowled by Bryant for 2. With the score on 66-3, Thatcham looked to the opener, Sharp, and the new batsman Nick Voller at five to steady the ship. Sharp however, couldn't get out of the way of a short ball from A Raisat, gloving the ball through to the keeper and falling for 21. This though, brought Nathan Redmond to the wicket, who had already had substantial partnerships with Nick Voller this season. The pair seemed to carry in the same form they'd had all season, with Voller looking to play defensively and Redmond looking to punish even a slightly wayward ball. Boundary's started to flow and on several occasions, we saw text book straight and cover drives from both batsmen. They'd taken the score from 70-4 up to 150, when Nick Voller was caught pulling for an obdurate 24.

Steve Bartholomew came in at seven and hit his first ball for 4 through extra cover. Both batsmen looked comfortable, scoring freely, until Redmond got a good off spinning ball from D Baig, bowling him for an excellent and much needed 65. There score now on 180-6, the balance of the game could still go either way. Dave Wells came in at eight to join Bartholomew, only to see Bartholomew bowled playing across the line, by R Nadeem for 12. The Thatcham Skipper came in at nine to join Wells with the score now on 180-7 and in the 44th out of their 52 overs. Both batsmen were conscious that they should see the score past the 200 mark and batted defensively. That was until Ansell slog swept D Baig for 4 and in the next over, Wells smashed the same bowler for a straight 6 that landed in the next ground.

The batsmen achieved their target of 200 in the 49th over. In the 50th though, Wells looked to play a full ball over mid-wicket and was bowled. Nick Stewart came in at ten and together with Ansell, they saw the score through to 211, with just 1 ball to face. Nick Stewart, knowing it his wicket wouldn't give Burnham any extra points, came down the wicket in an attempt to hit the ball over mid-wicket, but was stumped for 1. Ansell finished on 22 not out.

Thatcham came out after tea and, using the old ball, opened the bowling with the spin of Jon Sabberton and the medium/fast pace of Nick Voller. Sabberton was getting little help from the old ball and it was decided to take the spinner off after just 3 overs. Sabberton was replaced by Gavin Ansell. Voller and Ansell took the new ball immediately and immediately got it swinging. The batsmen though, appeared to find life comfortable and were scoring in excess of 5 an over. That was until, with the score on 46, Ansell took the wicket of A Raisat, having him caught and bowled for 28. A Basharat joined the opener, D Baig and the pair looked to hit the ball hard, especially on the on-side, they quickly took the score into the 70's. It was then though that Nick Voller struck, first trapping Baig L.B.W. for 16, then bowling the promising Basharat for 22.

Ansell came off and was replaced by Nathan Redmond. Redmond found his length from the word go, but wasn't finding much swing. The scoreboard continued to tick over, numbers four and five, R Singh and F Ch, playing solidly. With the Burnham total approaching three figures, a sudden flurry of wickets came Thatcham's way, firstly Redmond taking a sharp caught and bowled chance, dismissing Singh for 7. Then in his next over, Redmond took 2 in 2, having F Ch caught at mid-off by Ansell and then bowling D Tarn for a golden duck next ball.

The score now at 110, Ansell replaced Redmond, who finished with fine figures of 6-0-3-38. Voller was still going from the other end, but was beginning to show signs of fatigue, pushing a few down leg side and losing half a yard in pace. Due to some aggressive batting by the Burnham numbers seven and eight, F Riaz and T Bryant, the score began to race again and quickly passed the 150. With Voller's spell coming to an end, he was replaced by Simon Heaver. Heaver struck almost immediately, having T Bryant stunningly caught by Steve Bartholomew for a fine 32. Ansell struck the next over, Louis Appella taking a towering catch and dismissing Riaz for 18. Simon Heaver wrapped up the Burnham innings, taking the final two wickets, on 168 all out. Ansell bowled 7-0-2-32, while Heaver shone, bowling 2.1-0-3-12.

This gave Thatcham a maximum 25 point win. With the top two, Kew and Datchet 3's, playing eachother and drawing, this pushed Thatcham Town 3's to the top of Division 6B of the Thames Valley League, now 9 points clear of second place Kew.

The next 3 weeks see Thatcham playing three teams in the bottom four of the league, NPL Teddington 3's away on the 1st of July, Eversley 3's at home on the 8th and bottom of the table Stoke Green 3's at home on the 15th. With Kew and Datchet to follow that, Thatcham will be looking to extend their lead, prior to playing their closest challengers.
