Datchet III v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday on Sat 22 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 46 runs

Match report Thatcham Town 3's travelled away to play their Datchet counterparts last Saturday. Starting in light rain, Datchet won the toss and decided to bat first, keen to put to bed the memory of being bowled out by Thatcham for only 65 earlier in the season.

Thatcham opened with the bowling of Nick Voller and Will Clarke, which lead to few runs being scored initially by Datchet. Nick Voller's first five overs were all maidens with the sixth only being spoiled by a front foot no ball, having slid past the crease in the damp conditions. We reached 12.1 overs gone before the rain got too heavy for play and the players came off the field. Only 10 overs were lost though, on a day when many other games had been abandoned.

Nick Voller continued with Liam Redmond bowling from the other end. In the now wet conditions, Redmond struggled when landing his front foot, which led to him fighting to find his usual line and length. Nick Voller got the initial break through for Thatcham, having P. Isherwood caught at cover by Martin Keep, back in the side after 2 weeks out of the game. The score now on 28-1 in the 15th over, Datchet were starting to wonder if the decision to bat was a wise one. Liam Redmond bagged a wicket in his next over, T. Holland middling a square cut straight into the hands of the waiting Jon Sabberton at point.

Nick Voller continued to bowl in the same miserly fashion and bagged is second of the day in the 19th over, dismissing the remaining Datchet opener, C. Edwards for 16. Nick Lynch taking a good catch at square leg. Voller's figures so far were an amazing 10-8-2-4. His figures improved further as he bagged his third in his next over, N. Jones caught by Gavin Ansell at wide mid-off.

Ansell then cam on to replace Redmond, finishing with 5-0-1-30. Ansell too, struggled with his line and length. He was unlucky though not to get a wicket in his second over, seeing a regulation catch spilled. Though he could consider himself lucky to get the wicket he did in his forth over, a long hop hit straight to Will Clarke at deep square leg, removing the dangerous N. White for 30 runs, all but 2 of which scored in boundaries. Nick Voller was again in the wickets, having P. Tilley caught behind by Steve Bartholomew for 21. Ansell brought himself off after that lucky wicket, to bring back Will Clarke. He along with Voller again made a good partnership, Voller trapping R. Brockies LBW for 3.

The next wicket saw a mix up in the Datchet running and the Datchet captain, Nick Bellman, superbly run out by a direct hit from Liam Redmond, his third such dismissal of the season so far. With both Nick Voller and Will Clarke staring to look tired, Simon Heaver was brought on to replace Clarke and immediately made his presence felt, getting O. Arif caught for 1 by Martin Keep in the covers, his second catch of the game. With the Datchet score now on 142-9, Jon Sabberton came on at the other end to replace Voller with his left arm spin. He was hit for a 4 in that over, but also took the final Datchet wicket with his last ball, the Datchet innings closing on 146 all out.

Thatcham felt as though they had done everything they needed to do in the field, giving themselves 51 overs to chase down 147, a score they had passed on every occasion so far this season. The final bowling figures were as follows, Nick Voller 19-8-5-48, Will Clarke 9-2-0-30, Liam Redmond 5-0-1-30, Gavin Ansell 4-0-1-22, Simon Heaver 1-1-1-1-0, Jon Sabberton 1-0-1-4.

Thatcham town opened with Paul Sharp and Kieran Lynch. Datchet took the old ball at the start of their innings and Thatcham new that it could swing if Datchet bowled well, after they had put so much work into looking after the ball in the wet. Sharp was gone in the second over, bowled round his legs for 1 by a swinging ball from Nick Bellman. Martin Keep came in at number three and immediately looked to get after the Datchet bowling, playing most of his shots through and over mid-wicket. The Thatcham innings started to build nicely, Lynch playing very correctly, resolutely defending anything on his stumps, then cutting and pulling anything loose. While Keep at the other end was still hitting the cover off the ball. That was until he try to heave a yorker length ball over mid-on and saw his stumps knocked back, gone for 31.

The score now on 45-2, needing a further 102 for victory with 8 wickets left, Thatcham still felt confident they would achieve their goal. Liam Redmond came in at number four, but always looked uncomfortable against the swinging ball. He was bowled for 4, trying to play across the line. This was the beginning of the end for Thatcham... Nick Voller came in at five and was caught immediately for a duck. Steve Bartholomew at number six also came and went without troubling the scorer. Will Clarke came in at number seven, only to see Kieran Lynch, after playing so well, fail to make his ground again after playing the ball into the ground, allowing the keeper to come and collect the ball and run him out. Gavin Ansell came in at eight, but also went for a duck, caught at slip.

The score now on 67-7, Thatcham had all but thrown it away. Their hope now lied with Will Clarke and Simon Heaver. While both men are capable bats, neither had proved so far this season, that they could do this kind of a job for Thatcham. It proved to be so, Heaver racing to a quick fire 26 in typical style, hitting four 4's and a 6, before offering a tame caught and bowled chance to O. Arif. Nick Lynch was at number ten, but was soon also gone for a duck, caught at slip. Jon Sabberton was at 11, but didn't face a ball. He saw Clarke at the other end smash a glorious 6, miles over long-on. Only to then let himself be tamely caught at mid-wicket. The Thatcham innings closed on 100 all out. R. Cox was the pick of the Datchet bowlers, 10-6-5-14, while O. Arif finished with 16.2-4-4-60 and Nick Bellman 6-1-1-26.

This was a huge opportunity missed by Thatcham, who only picked up 6 points from this game, instead of the 20 they should've claimed. This saw them slip from top of division 6B of the Thames Valley Morrant League, now second 7 points behind Kew and only 2 ahead of Datchet in third. With Thatcham playing Kew 3's next Saturday at Henwick Sportsground, they will need to put on a seasons best performance to claim maximum points and see themselves restore to top of the table.
