Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v Kidmore End III on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report Thatcham Town 3rd XI played hosts to Kidmore End 3's last Saturday. Kidmore End won the toss and decided to bat first. Thatcham opened their bowling with the young pairing of Nathan Redmond and Will Clarke, both of whom bowled well, Clarke picking up the first wicket of the day in the fourth over. Wickets began to fall steadily, as Clarke picked up 3-9 in his first six over spell (8 of the 9 runs coming from wides!), though Redmond was wicketless at the other end in his first spell, he was right to consider himself unlucky, as several chances went wide of the field. Gavin Ansell and Liam Redmond came on first change for Thatcham. Both bowlers struggled somewhat with the wind, particularly Ansell, bowling into what seemed like a force 7 gale. Ansell was wicketless from his 7 overs, whereas Liam Redmond collected a brace of wickets from his first spell 2-33 from 7 overs. It should be noted though, many of those runs off Redmond would've been saved, were it not for some shambolic fielding by Thatcham!

The Kidmore End opener, P. Lawson still remained though, having looked very solid at the top of the order. It was the spin of John Williams that was his undoing, see one pitch on middle and leg, turn past his outside edge to clip the top of the off stump, out for 62. Williams (left arm spinner) must have been watching Monte Panesar bowling to Younis Khan, as that ball was no less a delivery that dismissed the Pakistan batsman. Williams took another wicket that over, bowling the Kidmore End number 9, to earn himself a double wicket maiden and figures of 2-35. It was then down to the opening pair of Nathan Redmond and Will Clarke to mop up the tail. This took a lot longer than we hoped for, as the Kidmore End innings drew to a close on 237 all out. Lessons for both sides in that innings as Thatcham allowed a total of 76 extras, including 31 wides , 20 byes and 13 no balls. The Kidmore End camp will be wondering why 8 of their players were out bowled and the remaining 2 LBW.

In the second innings, Thatcham opened with the inimitable Bob Gadsden and the returning Stuart Gregory. Both batsmen looked assured against the attack of Kidmore End, running well between the wickets and stroking boundaries wherever possible. They took the score to 48 in the 11th over, when Gregory mistimed a forward defensive to a slower ball from T. Butler and was caught and bowled for a useful 21. With Gadsden in the form of his life this year, all the Thatcham line up had to do was stay at the other end and support the opener. Dave Taylor came in at number three and took the score up to 80, before being bowled by a quicker yorker from M. Ihras for 14. Martin Keep and Nathan Redmond came and went a four and five, out for 4 and 0 respectively. This brought the 14 year-old Jamie young to the crease, in his first appearance for the 3rd XI, he strode to the wicket with confidence and was not fazed by finding half a dozen men crowding the bat. The Thatcham score was on 86-4 when the pair came together, and thanks to some great stokes from both batsmen and good running between the wickets the pair put on a brilliant 123 for the fifth wicket, before Young was unfortunately caught, mistiming a drive, for a fine 28 runs. He came of the field to rapturous applause from his team mates, deservedly so!

Liam Redmond came in at number seven, but did not trouble the scorers. In the fading light, comparable to England v Pakistan in Karachi 2002, he failed to see the ball until it deflected off his pads on to the stumps. With the Sun now below the horizon, John Williams walked out at number eight with the score on 214-6, meaning Thatcham Town had probably 15 minutes to score 24 runs before it would be the moon providing what light was available. The pairing of Gadsden and Williams had no trouble however as they blasted their way to victory from then on, finishing on 240-6 from only 41.3 overs, wining by 4 wickets. Williams was 9 not out at the close, but the performance of the day went to Bob Gadsden carrying his bat to score 130 not out, giving him the honour of the highest innings of anyone in the club this season and a average of 100.75 for the season.

The win gave Thatcham a vital 20 points, after an inconsistent middle part of the season, taking them top of Division 6B of the Thames Valley Morrant League, 2 points clear of second place and 4 points clear of third. It looks like a tight finish this year for the TTCC 3rd XI, but with the teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th all still to play eachother, Thatcham will feel they are in the drivers seat and it's theirs to lose. Next week they travel away to Chiswick & Latymer 4's, having bowled the out for only 64 earlier in the season, Thatcham will go all out for maximum points.
