Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 3XI- Saturday v Burnham III on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 12.30
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham Town 3rd XI played hosts to Burnham 3rd XI last Saturday. Needing to gain ground on Kew and Teddington Town, Thatcham Town were keen to bat first to go for maximum points, however Burnham won the toss and decided it would be them batting first.

Thatcham started off tidily, with the bowling of Nick Voller and Nathan Redmond, Voller picking up a wicket in his second over trapping Nawaz LBW for just 1 run. That early set back seemed to cause Burnham to play very watchfully and not look to score runs quickly. In the 8th over, Redmond bagged his first with Tony Wimbush taking a regulation catch at extra cover, Naddem gone for 3. With the score now on 20-2 after 8 overs and then 41-3 after 14 (Redmond bagging the second of his two wickets in the day), Thatcham were looking to get through the Burnham line up quickly. Will Clarke came on to replace Redmond, but was out of sorts, struggling for all aspects of control and leaking 21 runs in his 3 overs (3-0-0-21). Paul Westbrook, in his first game for Thatcham after transferring from Hungerford, came on for Clarke and immediately made a breakthrough, having Bryant caught by the impressive fielding of 14 year old Carl Self.

This wicket though, brought to the crease Pat Hughes for Burnham, to join the not out opener, N. Haines. The score now on 75-4, Thatcham still had the edge, but that was soon taken away from them, as Hughes was clapped to his 50 in less than ten minutes. His shot a ball attack was too much for the Thatcham bowling, as he hit boundary after boundary. Haines at the other end now also looked to play more expansively, reassured that his partner at the other end was in no trouble. The Thatcham skipper, Gavin Ansell, brought himself on to bowl to replace Westbrook after his 3 overs (3-0-1-23). Voller, having bowled 15 overs in his first spell (15-6-1-56), was visibly getting tired, so was replaced by Tony Wimbush. The bowling changes didn't appear to have much effect as Ansell's first two overs went for 18 and Wimbush's first went for 10 runs. After another boundary to take Hughes to 70, Ansell made the breakthrough, holding on to a sharp caught and bowled chance to dismiss the dangerous batsman. The Burnham score now on 166-5 from 32 overs, the remaining batsmen looked to continue with their powerful hitting and took their score to 257-6dec after 50 overs. Tom Mahoney taking the only other Burnham wicket, bowling A. Hussain for 23. The opener, Haines was not out 85 with his partner, the Burnham skipper, Aubrey Bryan not out on 31.

In reply, Thatcham opened up with Bob Gadsden and Jamie Young, who both performed superbly in their last partnership. They suffered early losses though as Young went for 1, Gadsden for 10 and Gavin Ansell, at number four also went for only 1. This meant Paul Westbrook and Nathan Redmond (numbers three and five respectively) had to build the bulk of the Thatcham innings. Both men looked to get after the Burnham bowling, regularly hitting boundaries. That was until Westbrook was caught for 24 at point. The Thatcham score was now on a worrying 55-4, and it was beginning to look like Thatcham were going to capitulate. Tony Wimbush, joining Redmond, had other ideas though. With Wimbush happy to push 1's and 2's and Redmond punishing bad balls by sending them over the boundary rope, the Thatcham innings started to look a bit more respectable. Wimbush went off retired hurt for a short time, after being struck on the forearm by a full toss from A. Bryant. The bowler received an official warning from the umpire, as this was by no means the first dangerous ball he had bowled. Michael Hobbs, another 14 year old, came in at seven and looked comfortable, back foot driving his third ball for 4 runs through cover. Nathan Redmond at the other end smashed his way passed 50 with a superb on drive and took himself up to 74 (his best innings for the club), before being trapped LBW by A. Bryant. Tony Wimbush came back to the crease, having stopped his hand from shaking, but soon joined Redmond back in the pavilion for a much needed 36. The score now on 166-6, Thatcham were still looking likely to fail in their run chase. Nick Voller came in at eight to support Hobbs and together, the pair took the score on to 219-6 after 43 overs. With Thatcham now needing 39 from the last 7 overs, it was now game on for both sides.

Nick Voller was then bowled for 27 and Will Clarke completed a bad day for him as he went for only 4 runs, well caught at mid-wicket. With Carl Self joining Hobbs and having Tom Mahoney in reserve at number 11, Thatcham needed 32 from the last 4 overs. This proved too big an ask for the 3 youngsters, understandably, as Carl Self was run out for 5, admirably doing his best to get close to the Burnham total. The Thatcham score on 236-9 and with 5 balls remaining, Tom Mahoney superbly played out the maiden to earn Thatcham a draw.

With Thatcham only picking up 8 points and the teams above winning, they now find themselves 14 points adrift of second place and the last promotion spot. With 2 games to go, and the top 2 teams having a difficult run in, Thatcham will look to score the maximum 50 points available which will be likely to give the enough points to go up. Thatcham face NPL Teddington 3rd XI next week at Henwick Sports Ground.
