Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI, playing their first Thames Valley League game of the season on Saturday, struggled against Bagshot III’s, loosing by 64 runs.

Choosing to bat first on a slow damp wicket at Henwick, Bagshot III’s amassed 181 for 8, with all of the top five batsmen contributing. On a slow damp wicket it was a day for accumulating runs rather than extravagant stroke play, and skipper Barry Funnell led the way with a fine 75, ably supported by Clark (22) and Fletcher (19).

Thatcham bowlers stuck to their task well with Natham Redmond particularly unlucky to finish wicketless from his 11 overs. Colt Michael Green made the initial breakthrough taking 1 for 28 from his 6 overs, and with the wicket taking spin Dave Wells chipped in with 1 for 37. However, it was a day for nagging line and length and it was the experienced pair of Tony Glinos and Andy Stephenson who benefited most from the conditions with Glinos the pick of the Thatcham bowlers with 3 for 44 from 17 overs and Stephenson 2 for 28 from his 9 overs.

Thatcham batsmen always struggled to cope with the slow wicket and some accurate Bagshot bowling, with only opener Mickey Stone playing with any sort of assurance for his 29. No other batsman reached double figures as Thatcham slumped to 65 for 7. However Dave Wells, with an entertaining 34 and Tony Glinos with 15, restored a semblance of respectability sharing a 9th Wicket partnership of 51. Thatcham were eventually dismissed for 117, some 64 runs short of their target. M Sutherland was the most successful Bagshot bowler with 5 for 37, backed up by P Robinson (13-6-21-3) and M Clark (10-3-33-1)
