Match report A depleted Thatcham Town 4th XI recorded a fine win against Cove 4th XI on Saturday.

Put into bat on a wet wicket and with rain steadily falling for an hour or so after the first few overs, Thatcham’s innings was held together by a great knock by Micky Stone, scoring 68 during his 50 overs at the crease. Wickets fell steadily at the other end and apart from Simon Heaver who hit a quick-fire 16, all the batsmen found shot making difficult. Thatcham youngsters Jamie Young and Daniel Stephenson, gave Micky Stone fine support batting for 24 overs between them, and with useful knocks from Mark Keavney and Piers Bragg, Thatcham gave their bowlers something to work with in reaching 123 from the 52 overs. C. Taylor (16-4-24-4) and S.Nunn (10-3-24-2) were the pick of the Cove bowlers.

After a steady start Cove batsmen found the conditions far from their liking, and with the ball moving around in the air and off the pitch, the Thatcham bowlers soon had Cove in trouble. Andy Stephenson took the first four wickets, finishing with 4 for 26 from his 11 overs, Simon Heaver, with a fine display of swing bowling was unlucky not to pick up more wickets but still posted 3 for 37 from his 15 overs. Dave Wells completed the task picking up 3 quick wickets as Cove collapsed to 84 all out. The bowlers were backed up by tremendous fielding and catching – Adam Bigwood and Kevin Hunt in particular making difficult chances look easy.

A very satisfying win in difficult circumstances and the only 25 point win in the division during the weekend moves Thatcham 4th XI to up to fourth.
