Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v Aldershot III on Sat 01 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Match report It was a hot and hard day in the sun on a batsman’s wicket at Henwick Lane but Thatcham managed to chase 248 successfully to get a well-earned 20 points.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bowl Thatcham took the field in the hot dry conditions. Aldershot’s opening pair raced away at 5 an over until the introduction of self confessed miserly old git Tony Glinos. It took Thatcham 25 overs to get the break through, by which time Aldershot had put on 117. Glinos getting a foot to a straight drive, turning it onto the non-strikers stumps for the run out. Aldershot’s M. Frazer having scored 62 was understandably shocked to heading back to the hutch.

With such a fast outfield, Aldershot continued to score runs as anything in a gap seemed to race away for 4. Thatcham took to changing round to bowling regularly at one end with all the bowlers having their averages battered. Only Tony Glinos’s nagging line & length bowling, with 23 overs from one end yielding 2 for 62, had any real joy. Though in the heat, goodness only knows how he managed to keep going.

Aldershot closed on 248 for 5 off their 52 overs. Given the Thatcham team were at one point looking at chasing 300 plus, to peg back a side who were clearly strong in the batting department was a good effort.

Another excellent tea from Lynn Pye and as always served with great style by Vic. There were moves afoot to cancel the second innings in favour of watching England in the football. However Dave Taylor and Jamie Young padded up and headed out.

After a solid start, including a quick fire 21 from Liam Redmond, Dave Taylor and Joe Commuskey came together in the 11th over for a 4th wicket stand of 177 that really broke the back of the runs required. Some outstanding stroke play, some lusty blows and a great demonstration of running between the wickets took Thatcham to 211 in 40 overs. With only 37 needed for the victory and only 1 needed for his hundred, Dave played a poor stroke & was caught behind. A real shame because he deserved the ton.

With Joe Commuskey now anchoring the innings, John Williams came to middle to see Thatcham home. His 24 in 4 overs saw Thatcham over the winning line as a disbelieving Aldershot team were left wondering how they scored 250 and still lost.

Thatcham closed on 249 for 4, claiming the 20-point win.

Which leaves only one other point to make. 69 Not Out by 14 year old Joe Commuskey for his first senior 50. An outstanding effort. Now 2 of this group of talented colts have passed the 50 mark this season. Senior players beware your places.
