Wokingham Oaks & Acorns v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 10 wickets

Match report Top of the table Thatcham Towns 4th XI unbeaten run came to an abrupt end with a comprehensive 10 wicket defeat at the hands of Wokingham O & A at Bearwood College on Saturday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat Thatcham openers Mick Stone (14) and Kieran Lynch (17) put on 38 for the first wicket, but this was to be the largest partnership of the innings as eight batsman reached double figures but no-one was able to build a big score. Indeed when Bill Fry was dismissed for 24 with the score on 99 for 6 Thatcham were struggling to reach a defendable total, but a fine 39 from Piers Bragg ably supported by Ben Cruise, Tony Glinos and Simon Chapple saw the last four wickets put on a further 85 runs to gain 8 vital batting points.

The Wokingham bowlers supported by fine fielding and catching picked up wickets regularly with eight of the wickets falling to catches as Thatcham were dismissed for a disappointing 184 in the 47th over. Chris Lack with 5 for 29 was the most successful bowler, but all four bowlers bowled tidily with S Thornton (2 for 42) and Imran (1-44) also bowling particularly well.

Although the total of 185 was well short of the hoped for 250 it did at least give Thatcham something to bowl at but it was soon apparent that the Wokingham openers S Thornton and S Herrington were in no mood to hang around. Thornton in particular, surely playing several divisions below his potential, was in extremely destructive mood. He severely punished any ball that was slightly wide or not on the perfect length and with a short boundary and quick outfield he raced to three figures – his 100 coming from only 62 deliveries – eventually finishing on 120 not out, of which108 came in boundaries. Herrington was slightly more circumspect but his 58 not out also included 11 boundaries. All the Thatcham bowlers were hit to all parts with only Piers Bragg’s figures showing a semblance of respectability amid the carnage as Wokingham reached their target of 185 in 24 overs without losing a wicket.

This was a very bad day at the office for Thatcham 4’s which saw them slip to third place in Division 7A of the TVL. A marked improvement in all departments will be required for next weeks visit to second place Windsor, if they are to maintain their promotion challenge.
