Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday v Cove IV on Sat 05 Aug 2006 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 10 runs

Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI finally put an end to their recent run of poor results with a dramatic 10 run victory over third place Cove 4th XI at Henwick on Saturday.

After losing the toss and being put into bat on a greenish wicket Thatcham started well with openers Mick Stone and youngster Jamie Young putting together a solid opening partnership of 38 against some tight Cove bowling – with R Austin in particular bowling extremely accurately early on. It was Austin who made the breakthrough trapping Young lbw for a well worked 19.

The Cove bowlers then applied the pressure and two further wickets fell and the scoring rate fell before Bill Fry (26) and 14 year-old Nic Monger took the attack to the Cove bowlers. Monger was in particularly fine form hitting five boundaries before being caught for 44 with the score on 136 for 7. Michael Hobbs and Piers Bragg chipped in as the tail wagged to take Thatcham to 166 all out from 48 overs.

Cove were rightly pleased with their bowling efforts as Thatcham fell some 50-60 runs short of their target. R Austin bowled unchanged from one end finishing with 5-71 from 24 overs. The pick of the bowlers however was Hampshire colt, J Finney who turning the ball very sharply took 3 for 37 from his 10 overs.

Thatcham did at least have something to bowl at, but M Carter and S Carter soon got into their stride, taking the total past 50 before smart fielding by Piers Bragg ran out S Carter for 29. Nic Monger then trapped C Rane lbw and Thatcham were back in the game. However after a shaky start J Leakey went on the attack to take Cove to within 50 runs of victory.

The game was turned on its head however when M Carter was finally out, caught and bowled by Andy Stephenson, and the remaining batsmen were unable to settle against Stephenson and fine swing bowling from Ben Cruise. Almost every chance was taken as the game swung Thatchams way and Cove slumped to 140 for 8. S Clarke batting at number 10 threatened to add a final twist with a defiant 13 not out, but when Austin was clean bowled by Stephenson, Thatcham clinched victory by 10 runs.

Ben Cruise bowled superbly and was unlucky not to take more wickets finishing with 3 for 38 from 15 overs, and Stephenson rolled back the years to finish with 5 for 19 from his 8.2 overs.

This result takes Thatcham 4th XI back to third place in division 7A with everything to play for in the remaining 4 games of the season.
