Basingstoke V v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 26 Aug 2006 at 12.30
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham Town 4th XI failed to claim the last two wickets and narrowly failed to clinch a late victory against Basingstoke 5th XI on Saturday.

Batting first and after losing an early wicket Thatcham were indebted to colt Kieran Lynch and the experience of Paul Sharp batting in tricky conditions at the start of the innings, to set the foundation for their total of 206 for 6 from their allotted 52 overs. Lynch, after riding his luck early on, batted very well as he went on to make a his first half century for Thatcham before being trapped lbw for an excellent 62. Sharp narrowly missed out on his 50 when he was bowled for an assured 43.

With the foundation set and with wickets in hand Thatcham were able to accelerate the run rate and 14 year old Nic Monger did just that, hitting a fine 37 of just 34 balls. Andy Stephenson (22), Dave Wells (16) and Simon Chapple continued to take the attack to the Basingstoke bowlers taking the total past the 200 mark and maximum batting points in the 52 over.

J Vinn was the most successful Basingstoke bowler with 3 for 53, but all four bowlers stuck to their task well with opener K Goddard bowling very tightly to finish with 1 for 24 from his opening spell of 12 overs.

Basingstoke openers Blake and Booth started confidently but steadily against the Thatcham openers Chapple and Glinos. Although Booth had to retire hurt when on 18, P Gray joined Blake to take the score to 74 before Dave Wells finally made the breakthrough in the 29th over, having Blake smartly stumped by Lynch for 29. When Dave Wells picked up the wicket of Nurse shortly afterwards Thatcham were back in the game. A direct hit from youngster Adrian Bromhead to run out the dangerous Butler added to the pressure, and three wickets in one tremendous over from 16 year old Michael Green put paid to any chance of a Basingstoke victory. However with eight wickets down opener Booth was able to return to the wicket and with skipper Goddard was able to play out the last few overs and secure the draw.

Michael Green with 3 for 13 and Dave Wells with 3 for 25 from 13 overs were the pick of the seven bowlers used as Thatcham strived for the victory, but Tony Glinos, with a typically miserly spell of 8 overs for 13, and Nic Monger, who was particularly unlucky to finish with only one wicket, also impressed.

With second place Windsor securing a 20 point win this draw puts paid to Thatcham 4’s promotion hopes for this season, but the promise shown by the colts playing in the 3’s and the 4’s bodes well for next year.
