Challow v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday on Sun 09 Jul 2006 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 62 runs

Match report Thatcham Sunday 1sts Travelled to unbeaten Challow in high spirits after recording their first win of the season last week. In previous visits Challow has looked to be a 300 run batting paradise and both sides were keen to bat first. The home side won the toss and did indeed bat first.

Thatcham prepared for a long 42 Overs in the field, but after only 30 runs from the first 10 Overs they thought they were in with a chance. The tight bowling of Paul Jenkins and Ravi Mirchandani (9 overs for 35 runs) coupled with the introduction of Chris Bird was the result of the first breakthrough in the 19th Over with just 66 runs on the board. Then a suicide single attempted after middling the ball straight to Matt Denness at Mid Off and another wicket fell the home side found themselves struggling to post a big total at 127 for 3 after 31 Overs. Then some clever running by the batsman and some calculated gambles they started to accumulate runs more freely. Finally taking some risks in the last 5 overs with some working better than others, Challow managed to mount a respectable total of 200 for 7 from their 42 Overs.

Thatcham in reply struggled early on and were 14 for 1 off 6 Overs as Steve Bartholomew only managed to score 1 in his opening role. The newly elected skipper Simon Rider then joined Chris Barnes in the middle and the pair struggled to 31 off 15 Overs having both re-entered the country only hours before the game. Rider then took a liking to the change of bowling and hit 12 off the over to relieve some pressure. Having both then got to 20 they fell childishly in successive overs leaving the score at 56 for 3 from 19 overs. Ravi Merchandani took to the crease and decided runs were of the essence and did just that scoring a quick fire 27 before being removed by the home side’s Aussie pro. Matt Denness also struggled early but found the middle of the bat and started to look back in his Sunday form. He cruised to 20 including four 4’s and then was adjudged LBW much to his dismay! Paul Jenkins capitalised on the bad balls and added 17 before putting a full toss down square legs throat. Unfortunately at that point the tail didn’t wag and Thatcham ended on a disappointing 138 All Out. A game where after working so hard to keep the target down there was not enough left in the tank to finish the job off.

Next Sunday is Sponsors day and bodes to be a spectacle of a game!
