Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday v Falkland II on Sun 18 Jun 2006 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 25 runs

Match report Thatcham Town's Sunday 2nd XI played their Falkland counterparts at Brownsfield on Sunday. Thatcham won the toss and chose to bat first, opening with Tom Donnelly and Matthew Denness.

Falkland opened the bowling with David Bloor (nephew of our very own Malcolm Bloor) and Luke Bosman. Bloor, though struggling for consistency in line, was swinging and seaming the ball with great effect. Donnelly facing the lions share of his first spell, took a while to lay bat on ball. Denness however was finding things comfortable in the middle and scored at a steady rate, though was a little fortunate to be dropped hooking, by Bloor no less.

It was in the 15th over, when S. Grimmond took the wicket of Donnelly, trapping him leg before for 11. Replaced by Martin Keep at 3, the runs continued to flow. Keep had played a few less than orthodox shots, before a brief council from Denness set him straight. Keep was eventually out for a good 39, caught at long on. Steve Bartholomew came in at four and straight away got off the mark, square driving for 4. Sadly that's all he could muster, as he was bowled through the gate. The score was now a healthy 190-3, Denness now was joined by Dominic Melville. Melville departed for 1, bowled by the turning off spin of Ashworth.

Simon Rider cam in at 6 to join Denness, and the pair ran well to push the total past 200. It was with the score on 217 that Denness finally fell, caught at the 45 of a full toss from Bolan for a fine and seasons best 118. Young Kieran Lynch came in at 7 with only 4 overs to go and as he has all season, looked assured with the bat. So much so that Rider and Lynch were able to add 35 runs in the last 4 overs to close the innings on 252-5, with Rider and Lynch 27 and 8 not out respectively.

After tea, Falkland opened their innings with White and Ledbetter, while Thatcham opened the bowling with Jamie Bishop and the skipper, Gavin Ansell. Both bowled well without reward, the visitors to Brownsfield reaching 40 without loss from the first 10 overs. Ansell brought himself off after 5 overs and was replaced by the ever young Tony Wimbush, bowling his off spin. Jamie Bishop bowled his nine overs through and was disappointed to finish with 9-2-0-42. Wimbush was bowling well, but was facing 2 well set batsmen who managed to score at a good rate, keeping wickets in hand.

Simon Ryder replaced Bishop in the 19th over and struck with his first ball, Bishop taking the catch at mid-on. Ryder took the wicket of the other opener in his 5th over, having White caught at deep square leg by Denness for an excellent 78. R. Bubby and S. Seth were now at the wicket for Falkland and both continued to try and get on top of the bowling. They came together at 121-2 and put on 70 for the 3rd wicket, when S.Seth was run out for 13 by Mike Beaumont. David Bloor came in at number four, but was also run out for only 2. Tony Wimbush's spell ended with figures of 9-0-0-50 and Rider's first spell finished on 6-0-2-25.

The next 6 overs were shared between Melville and Keep. Melville was unlucky not to get a couple of wickets in his first over, 1 chance evading the field and the other seeing Keep dropping what would have been an outstanding chance, running in from the deep. Melville struggled a little with his line, finishing with figures of 3-0-0-28. Keep bowled well from the other end, though did stray in line on the odd occasion. He was finding some challenging turn on a dry pitch though, and struck in his third over, taking the wicket of R. Bubby for 60, giving Keep figured of 3-0-1-18, his best for the season so far.

Gavin Ansell and Simon Ryder both returned to bowl out the remaining overs, Rider striking in his 9th and final over to finish with figures of 9-0-3-41. This put the score on 219-8. Ansell bowling the last over, knew he had to take the last 2 wickets to claim maximum points from the match, and so brought in the field, having everyone in a catching position. With the 2nd ball of the over, he bowled A. Neill for 3, giving him 4 balls to take the final wicket. An inside edge saw the batsmen run 2, only for Ansell to then find the outside edge of young Grimmond's bat. Sadly the ball went between Denness and Keep at 1st and 2nd slip, both men expecting the other to go for the catch. It went down to the final ball, Ansell bowled it straight and got a leading edge straight to Tony Wimbush at short mid-on. Sadly the catch went down and Falkland finished on 227-9, losing the game, but keeping the last 4 points from going to Thatcham. Ansell finished with figures of 9-0-1-39.

Thatcham took 20 points to Falkland's 4 from this win.
