Match report Some promising performances from the younger brigade provide some comfort as Thatcham II lost at home to Andover II on Sunday.

The visitors made steady progress against some good Thatcham bowling with father and son Andy and Daniel Stephenson (1-44) opening up with the latter making the breakthrough thanks to the first of two fine catches from wicketkeeper Jamie Young.

Tom Mahoney soon came on and picked up two wickets, one to a good catch by Nic Monger before Ravi Mirchandani (1-27) benefited from Young’s second catch to pick up the fourth wicket and at 65-4 Andover needed a partnership.

They got this from John Baxter who battled his way through the innings to carry his bat for 58 and Luke Andrews, who survived a couple of difficult chances to make a decent 70 before he became Felix Hartley- Russell’s (1-30) first senior wicket. Liam Sutton also showed some promise in six overs of off spin as Andover reached 185-5 from their 42 overs.

Thatcham’s reply started well with 15 coming from the first over but the loss of Young and Monger in quick succession, followed by an irresponsible shot by Robb Fraser left Thatcham in trouble at 27-3. Andy Stephenson made some quick runs but when he departed at 44-4 the writing was on the wall.

However, 14 year old Tom Mahoney and 12 year old Rahul Mirchandani showed real promise in adding 36 for the fifth wicket with Mirchandani in particular playing some fine strokes. Mahoney fell for 11 which meant Ravi Mirchandani joined his son in the middle. He threatened briefly scoring a quick 22 before one more big hit fell into the safe hands of a fielder.

Piers Bragg and Rahul then fell in quick succession, the latter for an excellent 21. There was still time for Daniel Stephenson to add 15 not out before Thatcham were dismissed for 139.
