Hungerford v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Sunday on Sun 30 Jul 2006 at 2pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report Thatcham Sunday 2XI inflicted Hungerford’s first Border League defeat for three years in an exciting game with a one wicket win with two balls to spare.

Hungerford batted first against the father and son partnership of Andy and Daniel Stephenson. It was the senior of the two who made the breakthrough dismissing the first four batsmen as Hungerford slipped to 54-4 after 12 overs and finishing with 4-32 from his nine overs. Dan Taylor and Small then added 50 before Ben Cruise (1-41) got rid of the latter for 5 but Thorp helped Taylor steady things as they added a further 39 for the sixth wicket.

The introduction of Eddie Wylie changed the game in Thatcham’s favour. After three innocuous overs he dismissed Thorp for 15 at the end of his fourth and then picked up the vital wicket of Taylor as he threatened to take the game away, bowled for an excellent 78. Wylie then wrapped things up quickly as only Andy Burbidge showed any resistance in the lower order. Wylie finished with 5-26 from 7.4 overs, his first five wicket haul in senior cricket.

Needing just over four an over Thatcham made a poor start, losing both openers with the score on 12. Youngsters Rahul Mirchandani and Ben Hayward set about repairing the damage but both fell at 33, the former to a fine catch by Taylor behind the stumps. Ben Cruise and Robb Fraser took the score up to 57 before Hungerford’s fine fielding display continued as Lloyd Ponsford took an excellent catch over his shoulder to dismiss Cruise for 11.

With only youngsters to come the partnership between Fraser and Andy Stephenson was vital and they looked to have weathered the storm and got on top when Stephenson was stumped for 24. Fraser rode his luck and took advantage of some generous catching lapses from Hungerford as he and Adrian Bromhead, playing his first senior game, took the total up to 150 when the youngster’s defiant innings came to an end on 13, bowled by the impressive Luke Presto (3-7).

Fraser reached 58 but then threw it away, tamely driving to cover to leave his team needing 12 with two wickets and three overs left. Wylie and Daniel Stephenson got them within four when Presto trapped the former in front for 4. Two runs came from the penultimate over with Matt Thom managing to keep the ball out for the final three deliveries. A wide at the start of the final over bought the scores level and then Stephenson flashed one behind square to seal a very good victory.
