Match report Having been put into bat on a wicket still damp from the previous evening’s deluge, Thatcham openers Craig Warburton and Kieran Lynch struggled against the lively and accurate opening attack of Narwal and Ahmed.

The scoreboard began to tick over with arrival at the crease of Tom Donnelly after Warburton had been bowled by Ahmed, but only 16 came from the opening 7 overs. Runs began to flow more freely once the opening attack were removed with Donnelly moving rapidly on to 15 before getting a leading edge to Rogers – Ahmed involved once again by taking a fine catch.

Keiran Lynch and Harry Martin moved the score on to 52 before Lynch departed for a hard fought 17 but when Martin followed almost immediately afterwards only six overs remained. Under 15’s colt Ben Hayward and Kent Wynne ran well between the wickets but that was the last partnership of note as a fine spell of 2 for 4 from 3 overs by Callender ended any hope of reaching the three figure target – Thatcham finishing on 74 for 6 from their 20 overs. Credit must go to the bowlers with the opening pair of Narwal (4-1-11-0) and Ahmed (4-1-9-1) setting the tempo, ably backed up by Rogers and Callender.

It was always going to be difficult to defend a total of 74 and with the wicket perhaps playing a little easier, Thatcham were up against it. However, Harry Martin, supported by Michael Green, bowled with real pace reducing Theale to 12 for 2 at one stage. Despite showing great team spirit the pressure could not be maintained and Callender with hard hitting 26 and Reeves with an equally aggressive 31 saw Theale to within sight of victory. Three quick wickets lifted Thatcham spirits but it was sadly too little too late as Theale & Tilehurst reached their target with two overs to spare.

Harry Martin was the pick of the bowlers bowling four over with real pace and accuracy for a return of 2 for 11. Only three scoring shots were made from this spell - and one of those was an inside edge for four. Michael Green (4-0-16-1) and Tom Donnelly (4-0-13-1) also bowled well as did Ben Hayward who took 1 for 0 in his only over.

So a disappointing defeat for a young side – all of the team will still be able to play for the U17’s for at least one more year - but a game from which many positives can be taken into next weeks fixture at Sulhamstead.
