Reading 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 12 May 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets

Match report Dan Stone’s reign as Thatcham captain started in the best possible fashion with a convincing seven wicket victory away to Reading 2’s.

With Josh O’Flynn’s early antics seeing him removed from the attack inside the opening five overs for bowling three illegal deliveries Scott Gibson made an immediate impact taking a wicket with his first ball. Gibson continued in the same ilk keeping to a tight line, not giving the Reading top order anything for free, and with his second wicket in the bag, Paul Jenkins joined in to leave Reading three down inside the opening quarter of the innings. A double bowling change bought the visitors another two wickets, with John Williams (1-21) and the returning Duncan Johnson (1-26) sharing a wicket apiece. The Reading innings began to meander until a terrible lapse in concentration gifted Thatcham their sixth wicket via a run out and an opportunity to attack the Reading lower order. Gibson and Jenkins returned to remove the final four wickets for just 14 runs to leave Thatcham a reachable, but potentially tricky, target of just 115. It was to be Gibson leading the attack picking up 4-19 from his 12 over stint with Jenkins claiming 3-28 from his 13 over spell.

A nervy start in Thatcham’s reply saw Josh’s O’Flynn and Winfield removed in similar fashion to two pieces of pre season misjudgement. Reading’s confidence soon began to waver as Dan Stone and Duncan Johnson grew in confidence as some ill disciplined bowling allowed the visiting pair to steadily pick off runs at a good rate. Having finally taken the new ball Reading got their reward trapping Johnson leg before for a fine 33 but the game was, in reality, already out of Reading’s reach. It was left to Stone to seal the victory with a boundary to see him to a well deserved 52 not out; supported across the line by Matt Denness (3 not out).

With Yateley losing their opening game to the recent poor weather, Thatcham can hope to build on an encouraging start as they welcome them to Brownsfield this coming Saturday.
