Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Bagshot on Sat 11 Aug 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets

Match report Look up bouncebackability in the dictionary and you’ll see Thatcham Town CC. Strangely it’s cross referenced with inconsistent…

With both teams possessing the ability to capitulate at will, and without warning, the toss could have put the game heavily in one teams favour; which by now we know all too well. Safe to say the outside bet was going to be the draw. Anyway Bagshot called it right and, for the sake of our sanity, wisely chose to bat first. Apart from Gibbo’s surprise bumper provided us with the first breakthrough of the day Bagshot made a stable but pedestrian start to their innings. You can’t really question the tactics - they obviously knew what we know now and sensibly chose to protect their fragile lower order.

Now, I thought we had some interesting tactics against spinners, but, to give them three wickets in their first two overs is totally specialist. Put our two wickets in one over last week completely to shame. Who are we to complain; the innings was wide open at 50 odd for five at drinks. Not another early finish I hear you say? Well, no. Bagshot found some resolve in a sixth wicket partnership that added a decent thirty runs before, yep you guessed it, spin brought the vital breakthrough. With Willo and Webbs coaxing demons out of the placid Brownsfield surface Bagshot had no answer to the question that continued to ask. Barring the occasional cross batted four the inevitable came in the 43rd over, the visitors all out for 114.

Willo was properly on it claiming his maiden first team five wicket haul, which given some of the balls that didn’t take wickets, was rightly deserved. Webbs continued to be as metronomic (and equally unlucky) as usual in picking up three for himself. The early minor irritations caused by Gibbo and Jenks gained them a wicket a piece but after the embarrassment of last week, it was a solid bowling performance.

Over to you batsmen…enjoy yourselves. Whereas most teams consider totals in 20 run chunks or ten over stints, we merely do it over by over. With the first one safely negotiated and all ten wickets in hand it was very much game on. Rishto and Den (15) gave us the solid start required and despite the latter nicking off the tempo had been set; chase this down at four an over. New dad Stoney fell to the same fate shortly after for nine but will Rishto still gunning it at the other end Bagshot were clinging on. Garvey (12) restored order to the chase and settled Tulip down in to making sure that no unnecessary points were given away; thankfully for the crowd as we couldn’t stand to watch any more chip and runs over mid off. Mate; just pull out the driver. Please.

With the Town seemingly cruising to an eight wicket victory Garvey made the unforgivable mistake of hitting the ball through cover half an inch off the ground. That kind of error will always get picked off. I’m still not entirely sure how he held on to it. It was an absolute worldy…Flynny came out and kept the fielders guessing during his five not out but Rishto kept going on his merry way; getting us home in the 30th over and finishing on an excellent unbeaten 72. Believe the hype or not, this lad can bat, but, like the rest of us its application; give yourself the chance to perform and you might surprise yourself (and potentially others too.) Still, quality knock and a lovely one to watch.

Overall a much happier Saturday spent on a cricket field but it was solely down to the team effort that had completely abandoned us over at Chesham. With contributions coming from every angle it was a satisfying day at Brownsfield and one that seals our position in mid table. Well, for another week at least. Kidmore End away next and with the holiday season in full flow; who knows what kind of team selections will be rolling out across the league…
