Kidmore End v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 12:30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 5 Runs
Match report
With Thatcham 5th in the league and Kidmore End just 20 points behind the away fixture at Kidmore End always had the makings of a close encounter, much like the first game which went down to the last over and ended in a draw. Upon arrival Thatcham skipper Stone continued his form with the toss and decided to bat first on what looked like a 250 wicket, but with the way we bat more likely 150.
Again we got off to a great start with the bat getting to 50 without loss within the first 10 overs thanks to some aggressive batting from Cody Simpson and Matt Denness before Den was trapped in front for 15. Stoney then joined Rishton at the crease as we continued to score runs at a good rate, Rishton going on to score his second straight league fifty before eventually falling for a very well batted 76. Garvey came and went for 1 and Stoney followed shortly after for 29 leaving us at 130-4 meaning it was time for our regulation middle order collapse, which we duly delivered losing our next three wickets for less than ten runs. Rochy and Webbs, Doomer, Birdy, Bealer, Miyagi etc etc. joined together at the crease and got us back in range to score 200 for full batting points before Birdy fell for a hard fought 18. At 9 down for 197 we managed to score 25 in the last 5 overs to bring our total to 222-9 from our 52 overs thanks to some quality ‘end of innings’ batting from Rochy who finished on well timed 40 not out.
With the wicket not offering too much assistance Stoney decided to take the old ball and open with spin at one end. Kidmore End however, repeated our good start before we eventually got our first breakthrough after the first drinks break. It was through the now 40 year old spinner Chris Bird who picked up another two wickets shortly after this. With good support at one end from Willo, PJ came on and immediately caused trouble slowing the run rate and picking up two wickets, Willo benefited from constantly practising the ‘tip back’ run out to leave the non-striker stranded out of his ground for our 6th wicket. The next partnership brought the home side well within reach of a victory needing 30 off the last 3 overs with two set batsman and 4 wickets in hand. Unfortunately for us they hit PJ’s last over for 19 runs leaving them 12 balls to score the last 11 runs. We managed to only give up 5 runs in the 47th over, heading into the last over only two results seemed possible, a win for Kidmore End or if we were lucky we could sneak a draw. Fortunately for us, Birdy had other ideas. The first ball of Birdy’s last over the batsman tried to hit him into the neighbouring farm only to be stumped by Rochy. The next batsman tried to hit him into the clubhouse, chipping a leading edge straight to PJ at point. The third ball saw Kidmore End captain Jeff Sheldon (53) hit a ball out to the mid-wicket boundary taking on Rishto who rocketed one in to the keeper and ran the skipper out. In strolled Kiddies Number 11 who we thought would dead bat the remaining 3 balls, however following a little ‘chirp’ from Rochy he decided to sweep his second ball for six only to be clean bowled. So as the dust settled from the final over a mamouth 4 wickets fell, Webs took 3 of those wickets to finish with 6-54 and a Run out saw Thatcham escaping with a maximum 25 points.
