Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Burnham 2 on Sat 25 Aug 2012 at 12:30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost By 7 Wickets

Match report For the second time this year Thatcham succumbed to Burnham in another low scoring encounter. While summer continues to dazzle us with the soaring temperatures and wall-to-wall sunshine you wouldn’t believe that it was almost autumn, and the final weeks of the league season.

Once again we made a complete mess of setting a total; despite the odd heavy downpour the innings lacked fluidity and at times any real purpose. Having lost Rishton and Den very early on, Burnham didn’t hold back in seeing off our top eight before we’d managed to break the 60 mark. Only Rochy and Gibbo (with a pair of 32’s) found a system for seeing off the good deliveries and punishing the poor ones as they restored some moderate respect to the total. So much so that Gibbo irritated Waqar to the point that he removed himself from the attack with just the five wickets to his name; could that possibly go down as maybe a breach of contract? Anyway, that went down as possibly the only moral victory for us on the day. Once Scotty perished the end was nigh and when Rochy fell soon after we’d been rolled for 127.

It looked very short of a decent total but having taken most of the weekend to complete the 41 overs bowled we might have darkness on our side later on…if we can take it that far mind you. Aside from that ninth wicket partnership, and the customary plucky rearguard from Webbs, it was another desperate effort from the rest of the order. Doom and gloom aside there was some pretty spectacular lightning going on behind the ground; bit too close for Jonno’s comfort though.

The Burnham response was brief but successful; with all that so called rain around it had to be. The first eight overs disappeared for 60, pretty much all in boundaries, as on this occasion the old ball tactic didn’t pay off for us. Taking the new ball slowed the chase as firstly Gibbo snared Waqar and Jenks removed the fellow Burnham opener but the game was very much up. Just a case of trying to pick up whatever points we could. Jonno picked up another one each but it didn’t stem the flow and Burnham got home just inside the 21st over, three wickets down.

As you’ve probably already guessed it was a bad day for us; but with us still only losing to the three sides above us we remain firmly set in fourth spot. With a trip to Boyne Hill on the cards for next week we’ll have to work hard to achieve our first positive result against one of the top three sides. Hard work ahead then…
