Yateley 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 46 Runs
Match report
Thatcham 2nd XI continued their fine start to the season with a 46 run win against Yateley 2Nd XI on Saturday.
Losing the toss Thatcham were asked to bat on a soft yet true wicket that looked like it would provide help for both batsmen and bowler alike. As with many innings early on in the season Thatcham started cautiously with Yateleys opening bowlers Dodd (4-48) and Roper (2-20) delivering the type of line and length that any Captain would be happy with.
The visitors struggled to come to terms with the slow wicket and accurate bowling of the home side and after 25 overs had crawled to 58 for the loss of 3 wickets with only Gale (36) looking at ease. Gale’s dismissal with the score of 64 bought Captain Steve Bird (34) to the crease to build a match changing stand of 66 with the newly promoted Callum Johnson (37).
Bird and Johnson helped push Thatcham’s score towards a more realistically defendable total, easing the nerves of the remaining batting line-up. Bird look at ease until he attempted to sweep a wayward leg side deliver from Kennett only to be bowled middle stumped with a deliver that turned very reminiscent of the Gatting / Warne deliver of 1993.
Thatcham continued to add runs whilst losing wickets to reach a final total of 176 for 9 from their allotted 52 overs with Liam Redmond adding a valuable and exceptionally mature 12.
Thatcham took to the field with the belief that victory was on the cards and opened the innings with spin attempting to disrupt the home side’s openers. The tactic nearly paid dividends with Bloor catching the outside edge of Howells bat only for the wicketkeeper to snatch and spill the chance.
With the early experiment not quite reaping the rewards the visitor’s had hoped for Thatcham changed tact and introduced the medium pace duo of Andrews and Johnson. Both bowlers took a couple of overs to gauge the pitch but it was not long before Andrews (2-29 from 10 overs) pushed a slightly quicker one through, which Soames obligingly edged through to Bird behind the stumps.
Andrews struck again in his next over removing Howells for 6, with a ball that hit the seam, straightend and clattered into off stump. Hancock and Moore came and went in quick succession both falling to the safe hands of Redmond and with Hassain bowled by Johnson for 2 the home side were reduced to 40 for 5 from 18 overs and Johnson finishing his first spell with 3 wickets to his name.
Sandford and Kennett started to repair the early damage with Sandford gaining confidence, inflicting some hefty blows and moving towards an early season half century. However a change in the bowling saw the returning Bloor remove Sandford for a well worked 48 and with Taylor at the other end striking an over later, with Andrews taking a stunning catch at Gully, Thatcham regained the initiative.
With the home side reduced to 99 for 8 Thatcham felt a victory would come sooner rather than later but Roper (21 not out) ensured this would not happen by playing each ball on merit, moving around the crease to compensate for the slowish track and hitting the bad delivers. Supported by Barrett (10) an 8th wicket stand of 28 developed and looked like it could upset the inevitable.
However the returning Johnson soon put pay to the unlikely change of fortune by removing Barrett and then Akhtar to finish with figures of 5 for 27 from 11.5 overs, allowing Thatcham to claim their second victory of the season and a maximum 25 points.
