Match report Thatcham 2nd XI continued their winning start to the season with a comprehensive 9 wicket win over league 5B newcomers Theale & Tilehurst 2nds on Saturday.

On the first real cricketing day this summer Thatcham won the toss and decided to bowl on a track that looked hard on-top but based on the last months weather almost certainly remained soft several inches below the surface.

Thatcham welcomed ex-team mate Josh Winfield back to the 2nd XI who was asked to start the proceedings alongside Jack Andrews. Winfield struck first removing Metha, caught and bowled to a delivery that divided players option as to whether it was a bump or not, however when asked, the umpire confirmed a clean catch allowing Thatcham to congratulate Winfield.

Andrews and Winfield both bowled well with Andrews accuracy rewarded with two wickets before his and Winfields spells came to an end with the visitors struggling on 26 for 3 from 14 overs.

Taylor and Johnson took over the reins each delivering differing spells of bowling, Taylor (0-17) bowling an accurate low run rate spell while Johnson (2-35) bowled a slightly more wayward spell but was rewarded with wickets.

Theale & Tilehurst batsmen struggle with Thatchams seam attack however Holder showed great maturity as wickets fell around him constructing a well-made 30. Kumar joined Holder during the Johnson / Taylor spell and decided to try and up the run rate adding 25 runs from 21 balls.

Captain Bird changed tack with the introduction of spin courtesy of Moore while continuing with seam with the re-introduction of Andrews. These two bowlers complemented each other with Moore delivering a meagre spell with only 16 runs coming from his 8.2 overs and Andrews, continuing on from his first spell, taking his wicket tally 6 and ending with final figures of 6 for 20 from 14 overs. Moore concluded the visitor’s innings with the wicket of Sankaran to leave Thatcham a target of 110 to win.

Thatchams opening pair of Winfield and Watts provided the perfect platform for Thatchams victory posting an opening stand of 61 from 17 overs. Winfield fell for 28, hitting the ball straight back to Kumar (1-16) who obligingly took the catch. Watts continued his workman like innings driving majestically through the covers and defending when required.

A close LBW call against Gale was the only remaining scare of the innings as Gale batted as if it was 1992 to finish 28 not out. Watts fittingly struck the winning runs with a pull to the leg side boundary to take himself to a well-deserved 52 not out, Thatcham reaching their target in 28.3 overs and increasing their league tally by another 20 points.
