Kew 3 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets

Match report Thatcham 2nd added a further 20 points to their league tally with another comfortable win against Kew 3rds on Saturday.

With the fixture played at Home Park in Windsor both teams were effectively playing away and, by the response of the ‘Home’ side when asked to bat first, both teams were hoping to win the toss and insert the other, fortunately for Thatcham the coin fell in their favour and Captain Bird asked Kew to bat on a pitch that nobody really knew anything about.

With first choice opening bowler Jack Andrews side lined through injury Josh Winfield and Callum Johnson were asked to take the new ball and each delivered spells that would make any Captain happy. Winfield struck first with opening bat Halsall half pulling half cutting a shortish delivery to Taylor who was stood at extra cover.

Meanwhile at the other end Johnson was delivering a plethora of unplayable deliveries to Kews other opener Hare, who after 12 overs at the crease and 2 runs to his name finally succumbed to Johnsons questioning line with a deliver that obligingly swung from its leg side path to hit middle and leg.

With a forced change, due to their U19 status, spin was introduced which immediately produced results with Monger supplying a viciously turning delivery that seemed to have been negotiated safely by batsman Sale however the ball had its own agenda and after being struck, decided to collide into the stumps, via the batsman’s pads. This left Kew precariously placed on 31 for 3 from 14 overs.

Law and Birtwhistle settled Kew’s early nerves with a stand of 44, striking any bad delivery for 4, however both batsmen kept Thatcham interested by providing chances, which may have been taken in previous weeks, but were not to be. Britwhistle finally fell for a well worked 26, prodding at a turning delivery from Monger (2-45) that took the edge providing Watts with an easy catch at slip.

The loss of Britwhistle didn’t faze the Kew batsmen as Law (55) and Suri (31) set about adding another 63 runs taking the score to 138 for 4 in the 46th over. Hoping to add some quick runs in the final stages, with wickets in hand, Kew decided to up the run rate and set a defendable total.

However this philosophy did not prosper well with Thatcham re-introducing Winfield and Johnson (3-46). Wickets tumbled with Winfield especially effective taking 3 in one over and finishing with figures of 5 for 25 from 11 overs. The home sides search for runs eventually petering out with the score on 164, having lost their last 6 wickets for 26 runs in 5 overs.

Thatcham’s response started in the same frame as previous weeks as they added 37 runs in the first 7 overs before McMillan, took what could only be described as a miracle catch, held onto a ball ferociously hit back at him from Winfield.

This only bought Simon Gale to wicket to continue his relentless search for runs and he did not disappoint. Kew in the meanwhile were hindered in their search for victory as Law, attempting to take another spectacular catch, dislocated his finger and had to leave the field of play to go to hospital.

Watts and Gale took advantage of the 10 man field and added 58 runs before Watts played one too many of his favoured back foot shots playing on for 43. Edwards added 16 runs stroking some spectacular cover drives but once again too many West Indianesk drives led to his dimise at the hands of McMillan (2-56).

Mahoney, returning from University for one week, was next to the crease and did not look like he had only played one game this season as he added 16 runs in double quick time, while at the other end Gale stroked the ball like a young David Gower on his way to majestic half century striking the winning runs and ending on 60 not out.

Thatcham play hosts to Finchamstead 3rds next week hoping to continue with their fine start to the season.
