Match report Thatcham Town 2nd XI broke through the 100 points mark as they picked up another 20 points with a hard fought victory over Finchampstead 3rd XI at Brownsfield on Saturday.

Another toss was won by Thatcham and as in previous weeks the opposition was asked to bat first. Finchampstead’s batsman took a cautious approach, reaching 24 after 11 overs with little drama to speak of and all 10 wickets in hand. Johnson then struck with the wicket of Biggs for 11, starting a change in kismet for the Home side.

Thatcham changed tempo with the introduction of spinner Nick Monger and although continuing in the same disciplined manner, faint hints of wickets kept Thatcham fielders interested as Finch’s batsmen Dewes (23) and Jones (24) adding 41 for the 2nd wicket.

With the loss of Dewes to the spin of Monger (4-32) the visitor’s fortunes took a turn for the worst as they lost their next 6 wickets for 15 runs, slumping from 65 for 1 to 80 for 7. Finch’s lower order decided runs were the order of the day and added another 43 runs in the next 10 overs but at a cost as they were finally bowled out for 123 in the 45th over.

Thatcham responded to Finch’s total in the usual positive manner as the reliable opening pair of Watts and Winfield added 30 before losing Winfield for 16 in the 9th over to the spin of Dewes (4-58). This loss instigated a period of unfamiliar nervousness for the Thatcham batsmen as wickets fell at regular intervals leaving Thatcham in the precarious position of 74 for 5.

Captain Steve Bird (20 not out) came to the crease and joined Monger (25) in a partnership that ultimately led to Thatcham’s final triumph as they took the score to 109 easing Thatcham’s worries.

It fell to veterans Bird and Moore to attain the final target and they didn’t disappoint as they took Thatcham past the visitors total for a well but hard earned victory.
