Cookham Dean 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 10 Wickets

Match report Thatcham 2nd XI continued their current form with a 10 wicket demolition of Cookham Dean 2nd XI on Saturday.

Winning the toss and applying their standard philosophy Thatcham asked the home side to bat on a track that although was hard on top had several areas that looked like it would favour the bowlers and this was to be proven correct as Thatcham restricted the home side to 167 for 8 from their allotted 52 overs.

Jack Andrews was welcomed back for injury and asked to open the bowling with left hander Tristen Allen (3-29). The combination worked well reducing Cookham Dean to 30 for 2 from Andrews and Allen’s 14 over spell. Andrews was replaced with the spin of Monger who unfortunately could not repeat the returns he saw last week and leaked runs at a rate that was not to the skippers liking.

Luckily for Thatcham at the other end the Captain had had a stroke of genius introducing the occasional medium pace of Simon Rider (1-21) who not only went for a measly 2.1 runs per over but also removed the dangerous Mohamed for 39 with a caught and bowled that would have thrilled a capacity crowd at Lords.

Monger eventually made way for Moore who provided the consistency required to ensure Thatcham did not chase a total beyond 175. Captain Bird managed to squeeze a couple of extra overs out of Rider as a lack of match fitness started to tell. Andrews was asked to return and although he didn’t take wickets his second spell helped apply the type of pressure that leads batsmen to make mistakes.

Moore (3-46) reaped the rewards of this pressure as he removed Davis (19) and Murdoch (27), as both batsmen looked to attack the Thatcham Bowling, at crucial times ensuring a firm foundation was laid, helping the Thatcham batsmen in the second phase of the game.

Thatchams opening pair of Simon Rider and Matthew Watts, seemed to have little intention of allowing number 3 Simon Gale any chance on improving on his Bradman like average of 98.5, as they took the game to the Cookham Dean bowlers from the start with a combination of clean hitting and well stolen runs.

The home side bowlers toiled to stop the Thatcham batsmen scoring at will but the run rate of 6 per over did not change much over the whole of the Thatcham innings as Thatcham cruised to the target of 167 without loss in the 30th Over with Rider (87 not out) and Watts (69 not out).
