Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Kew 3 on Sat 04 Aug 2012 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 4 Wickets

Match report Thatcham 2nd XI season continued to get more difficult as Kew 3rd XI visited on Saturday but still managed to continue with their current form as they added another 20 points to their league tally.

Thatcham once again won the toss and with a showery forecast in the offering asked the visitors bat. Things went Thatcham’s way from the start with Josh Winfield and Callum Johnson reducing the away side to 36 for 5 within the first 14 overs. Taylor was introduced first change and help further Kew’s woes when he removed Fleming with the score on 52 and Thatcham looked confident of an early finish as Shetty joined Winslade at the crease and immediately edged Taylor to first slip.

However the simple chance was put down and this saw a change in Thatcham’s fortune. Shetty and Windslade made Thatcham pay for the lapse of concentration as they added a 50 runs for the 8th wicket. Thatcham stuck to the task in hand and the re-introduced Winfield struck removing Shetty (25), caught behind by Bird, just as one of the predicted large showers entered the arena.

The rain that followed had the home side running for the covers and the visitors running for the pavilion. Fortune shone for Thatcham as the rain only lasted for 20 minutes or so and almost immediately after the restart Winslade returned a simple catch back to Johnson (3-50) for a well work 27, leaving Kew on 102 for 8. Once again Thatcham were in the driving seat and felt their chase would start in short time.

Humayan came to the wicket and to his team mates surprise produced a display of batting skills that had Thatcham questioning his lowly number 10 batting spot. In a display of positive batting and big hitting the small Bangladeshi contributed 50 runs of 79 run 9th wicket partnership with Taylor (32 not out). Thatcham didn’t help themselves as they dropped Taylor twice off Winfield (4-38) who was, by now pulling his hair out but at the same time breathing a sigh of relief knowing he had dodged the 5 wicket jug bullet.

Humayan eventually fell to Matt Taylor (3-38) soon after he reached his well-deserved 50 and it was not long before the Kew innings came to an end as Sheppard was bowled by Taylor, Kew finally finishing on 188 from 51.3 overs.

Players and onlookers alike had no reason for concern with Thatcham’s response to a total that could have been considerably lower. Wickets fell, partnerships were made and nothing seemed out of the ordinary as the Thatcham batsmen went about their Saturday business. Watts, Gale and Mahoney all got decent starts but in the usual ill-timed and mysterious manner lost their wickets for no apparent reason.

Winfield however felt it was his week to ensure the team made the total as he compiled and innings that would ultimately see Thatcham past the winning post. Kew’s hopes of a win were kept alive as Thatcham moved from a seemingly safe and comfortable 130 for 3 in the 35th over to a nervy more precarious 159 for 6 in the 42nd over.

Skipper Bird joined Winfield at the crease with 30 runs required and 6 overs remaining. Just as two weeks previously the 1st team returned back to brownsfield just in time to watch the final 6 nail-biting overs. Bird and Winfield struck the ball intelligently into the available spaces adding 25 runs in 5 overs leaving 5 required from the last over. Kew correctly drew in the field hoping the pace of Taylor combined with Thatcham’s will to win would produce the type of pressure that leads to wickets.

Skipper Bird soon put pay to any thought of a last minute disaster as he struck the first ball for four, bringing the totals level. When he dropped the next delivery just in front, Winfield knew preciously what to do without any referral back to his captain and ran through from the non-strikers end to complete the victory for Thatcham. Winfield’s first innings disappointments of not being able to purchase the obligatory jug for a 5 wicket haul where soon forgotten, as was the jug he had to buy for his eventual score of 58 not out.
