Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday v Cookham Dean 2 on Sat 01 Sep 2012 at 12:30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets

Match report Thatcham 2nd XI great season was finally confirmed this week as victory against Cookham Dean 2nd XI at brownsfield confirmed them as Champions of division 5B.

With the holiday, rugby and football seasons overlapping selection proved challenging for the Thatcham skipper who, utilising his vast and exceptional diplomatic skills managed to lure back, for a self-imposed retirement, the talents and experience of ex-skipper Nick Bishop with the promised of half a cider for a game that could ultimately confirm Thatcham’s dominance at the top of the division.

Having lost the toss for the fourth week in a row Cookham Dean decided to bat on another excellent Thatcham wicket that promised a good game but things went Thatchams way straight from the start as Callum Johnson and Matt Taylor combined to produce a devastating opening spell reducing the visitors to 14 for 3, with Taylor (3 for 40) taking all three wickets and Johnson bowling 7 overs, 6 maidens for 3 runs.

Cookham Deans batsmen decided attack was now the best answer and with G Davis especially aggressive things started to look more positive for the visitors. Captain Bird and bowler Moore (2 for 67) combined their collective knowledge to set a cunning leg-side trap. Davis obliged by hitting one too many aerial leg side shots straight down the throat of Gale at deep square leg. At the other end Tim Mahoney went around his usually Saturday business without fuss or incident as he provided 10 overs for only 25 runs helping to counteract the visitors new attacking approach.

Davis wicket slowed things down again for the visitors as A Brar joined Richardson at the wicket. Richardson having struggled all day tried to hit out but never quite timed the ball and eventually fell to Moore for a scrappy 42. Brar’s confidence was building with every over faced as he built innings worthy of the home sides praise. Supported by Paveley (27 not out) the visitors added 73 runs for the 6th wicket as the Cookham innings came to an end after their allotted 52 overs with the score on 175 for 5, with Brar finishing on an immaculate 59.

Thatchams response with the bat was never in question yet still potted with many almosts as the top order batmen all got starts but lost their wickets at the most in appropriate times. Simon Lewis and Jamie Young put on 53 in the first 10 overs only for both of them to fall within 4 overs of each other having scored 27 and 25 respectively. Gale (32) and Jack Young (35) both were guilty of the same crime as they look well on their way to complete the chase. Thatcham lost their 5th wicket with the score on 141 and still with 35 runs required the visitors sensed an outside chance of victory.

Stephen Bird was joined by Bishop and after 4 overs at the crease they had only managed to add 3 runs but each knew this was not a problem with 12 overs still remaining they could wait for the bad ball. Bishop did exactly that and enthralled the crowd in the 40th over when he hit Mohammed for two mighty sixes and a four taking the home side from 158 to 175 in one over.

This left Captain Bird to strike the winning runs from the first ball of the next over and earn the 20 points that would guarantee Thatcham the Title with one week remaining.
