Kennet Pirates v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham XI- Wednesday on Wed 06 Jun 2012 at 6.10
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 60 runs

Match report Thatcham Town Wednesday XI looked to continue momentum from their last gasp victory last week with a testing fixture against local derby rivals Kennet Pirates. The Pirates do normally feature Thatcham CC colts such as Tommy Mather, Owen Jenkins, Ali Cooper etc however at half term they were all at Butlins in Bognor Regis and the Pirates captain told me he’d got a ringer to drive up from Cornwall for a fixture that was very nearly cancelled. Who was the mad westcountryman, I would like to know?
After a last minute fixture change to Kennet School after Browner couldn’t prepare the pitch, Town turned up to a wet, uncut outfield and, with James O’Connor and Eddie Wylie opening up, soon discovered that only the best-hit balls would make it to the boundary. Wylie (24) played a Marmite innings, mixing up some horrendous swipes with some deft, inventive shots to keep the scoreboard ticking, whilst O’Connor (19) timed the ball sweetly, content to rotate the strike with regular 1s and 2s. Peter Spriggs (14) and Josh Winfield continued the good start, and with 3 overs left a platform was set for the big-hitting pair of Winfield and John Williams (9) to flay the Pirates with the padded-up Admiral Rochfort and Commodore Edwards watching on. The swashbuckling Winfield (49*) started firing cannon balls to the fence at an alarming rate and the last 3 overs yielded 48.
The other highlight of Thatcham’s innings was watching the exploits of a TFC (thanks for coming), who clearly did not know the rules and carried a ball over the boundary not realising this would concede 4 runs. Let nobody say we’re playing village cricket.
With Thatcham taking the field in confident mood, Peter Spriggs must have taken a cheeky swig of rum and helped to brighten up a very dull evening on a very dull wicket with a barrage of wit and banter, which included the gems “good bowling Tommy, there’s more blocks here than at Legoland”; and, when the batsmen tried to be more adventurous, “oooo, well bowled Will, he’s swinging like a rusty gate”. No doubt such banter was easier to dish out given that he is a Theale schoolboy. Spriggsy even loudly applauded appalling deliveries in the hope it would convince the umpires not to signal wides. So much noise was he making that most of the adult batsmen either stared at him in mild annoyance or had a pop back (just to try and shut him up).
Aaron Voller went in search of the plunder, egged on by his old man who was umpiring, (“don’t bowl it short”) and produced the tightest spell of the season so far with 1/7 from his 24 balls, Nathan Redmond took 2/23 and benefited from that pressure. The first change bowlers continued the good work with Rowsell (0/23) and Tom Allison (1/20) keeping the required run rate sky-rocketing.
There were a couple of decent LBW appeals against the Maths and English teachers, but umpire Nick Voller thought hard about next week’s parents evening and failed to raise the dreaded finger. To be fair though, most of those LBW appeals came from mid-on (Rochfort) or square leg (Wylie).
Likewise the youngsters were unusually subdued, perhaps because most of them attend Kennet School. When some straight-talking, disgusted stares back down the wicket at the village batting was required, the likes of Allison, Rowsell and Voller instead turned meekly and head-down walked back to their markers. Nor was a single nasty bouncer thrown in to test the teachers. Hoping for some help with those exam results boys? Only James O’Connor, who goes to Park House, wasn’t giving away any booty and cut through the scurvy-infested, pleading-for-mercy Pirates in his 2 overs, yielding 3/8.
In the end 152 was too much to chase and the Pirates petered out at 92/9 in their 15 overs, leaving us with a 60-run win. That is good news for our net run rate in the Div 3 table...
