Boyne Hill v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 16 runs
Match report
Thatcham’s bowling came to the rescue against last season’s runners up as an impressive display in the field resulted in a morale boosting opening day victory at Boyne Hill.
In his first league outing as skipper, Den was quick to show his leadership qualities by asking all 10 players whether to bat or field if he won the toss – a decision that was thankfully taken out of his hands as he cleverly waited for the coin to drop before calling it wrong.
Whilst most of the side weren’t too displeased with batting first, poor Felix might have preferred a spell in the field having spent the morning failing another exam followed by a 60 minute car journey with Gibbo as company. Thinking the day couldn’t possibly get any worse, The Cat promptly played all round the very first ball of the season to see his middle stump upended. Thanks for coming.
When Den followed shortly after, things were looking ominous but Jonno (43) and ‘miracle of modern medicine’ Stoney (22) steadied the ship and began to rebuild the innings. Both were looking solid until Stoney realised it had been an hour since he last clocked in and decided to mistime a pull to head off for a phone call home.
Wrighty (21) managed to log off from nostringsattached.com for long enough to join Jonno in the middle and the pair dragged Thatcham back into the game until the impressive Hussain began to take control. Older Youngy (17) helped things along but Thatcham had no real answer to Hussain’s unerring accuracy and he bowled superbly to finish with fine figures of 5-34 from 16 overs, ably assisted by Johnson (4-39). Thatcham had reached a modest looking 140 and knew that a strong bowling performance was desperately required.
For the first time this season, CJ didn’t spend the tea break rutting on a bench, and the energy saved was clearly in evidence as he and Gibbo put in a good opening shift, ensuring that Boyne Hill didn’t get the chance to take the game away in the early overs.
Although the run rate was kept in check, wickets didn’t really look like coming until opener Davies lost patience to give Gibbo his first wicket. A superb take from Youngy soon after saw the back of skipper Mellor and when danger man Fernando fell to Flynny’s first straight delivery since 2011,Thatcham were back in with a chance.
Willo (2-15) and Webbs (4-23) were then introduced and both bowled with great control to further tighten the screw. The pressure saw a series of rash shots and with Boyne Hill soon reduced to 89 for 7, Thatcham were now in total control.
Boyne Hill were in desperate need of a partnership and Hussain and Maharoof added 23 before the latter inexplicably charged another Webbs long hop to give Youngy a simple stumping.
With little option but to do things alone, Hussain (27) dragged the home side to within 16 runs of victory but the re-introduction of CJ saw him sky one to Den who despite his best efforts, managed to hold on at the third attempt and seal a memorable victory.
It was a superb comeback for TTCC and a fantastic opening to the 2013 campaign. Top marks to CJ on his inaugural 1st team wicket and great to see Flynny get his reward after a lot of hard work over the winter. The side will look to build on the victory when Yateley visit Brownsfield on Saturday.
