Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Burnham 2 on Sat 31 Aug 2013 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Burnham rolled into Brownsfield last Saturday on what was a very pleasant late summer’s day.
The Thatcham wicket once again looked full of runs and with the outfield possibly at the quickest it has been all season, a big effort from everybody was required.
Burnham won the toss and Fish could not wait to get his boys batting. I suspect he also fancied bowling us out after tea after our recent dismal efforts against Waqar and co.
Gibbo 2-52 bowled well first up which was handy as the return of the ever consistent Johnson jnr was less than a triumph. A few overs in the nets before a game when you’ve been away might be in order, Lone Ranger. Flynnie 1-42 was called into action earlier than usual and didn’t disappoint bowling some good opening overs as he built up a heavy sweat and then began throwing the ball all over the place as the ball got too wet to grip.
It comes to something when you have to ask the umpire for a rag to dry the ball between overs as your first change has sweated all over it.
Just before drinks cymbals Young was made to cry by a Gibbo 50 mph quicker ball which took him on the finger. Youngie unfortunately was forced off and had to go to hospital for the inevitable broken finger diagnosis. This left us with 10 men until micro Spriggs arrived in the 44th over after bagging a golden duck for the 4ths. All joking aside a sad end for Youngsters season, which has seen his batting and keeping progress nicely in his own unorthodox fashion.
After drinks Dunc 2-69 and Doomer 2-58 got into a good rhythm as we pulled Burnham back to 150 for 5. A rash prediction of 180 all out from somebody who should know better however turned out to be very optimistic as Burnham piled on the runs.
A declaration was hoped for but didn’t come as the visitors enjoyed the facilities for the full 52 overs closing on 255 for 7. This was always going to be a big total, especially as Waqar would bowl about half the overs, equating to 200 runs to be scored from the other end.
A few missed chances underlined an under par Thatcham fielding display. The Lone Ranger spilt the easiest chance of the season at mid off. He later claimed that the removal of his teeth braces after 36 months had affected his balance. Another chance fell to 1st team debutant Peter Spriggs, who ran around under a lofted chance at mid on as if a seagull was after his bag of chips, before falling over as the ball landed 5 yards away.
After an excellent Mrs O Flynn tea, Gibbo and Lewie took to the field.
Burnham took the old ball and we made a good start with both batsmen looking in control. However, the new ball was taken and Mr Ahmed soon had it talking as Gibbo was bowled by a jaffa and Wrightie followed LBW to a much easier delivery.
Lewie managed to smoke a filthy long hop straight to long leg and suddenly we were starting to wobble. Speaking of wobble DJ was next. After handing Dot his final will and testament and sporting an extra pair of pants, he reached the crease with a bag of 6 inch nails and a hammer to try and keep his back foot in line.
H added a brisk 21, including a nice straight 6 and his departure brought Spriggsie to the crease. Burnham thought we had introduced the TFC early and their strike bowler was instructed to come of his short run to give the little lad a chance. Foolish. In spite of his squeaky voice and being only 4 foot 6 he can play, as Burnham soon found out as he repeatedly found the boundary on his way to an impressive 39.
DJ was now in full flow and going for the win he made an excellent 85, before falling in the penultimate over trying to create and unlikely Thatcham victory, with his last 51 runs coming from just 25 balls.
It was left to Denzil 18 not out to play out the last over, by adding 10 to the score and keeping Doomer from the strike the innings closed on 233 for 8 from 48 overs.
It was disappointing not to win the game, but a much better performance against a side who have been very much our bogie team in recent years.
