Thatcham 2nd XI paid dearly as they failure to capitalise on several good opportunities eventually losing by 45 runs to Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI on Saturday afternoon.

Thatcham won the toss and elect to field, proving the skippers decision correct as they took control of the game reducing Theale & Tilehurst to 135 for 6. However Thatcham were ultimately punished for not capitalising on this success by Theale’s middle order who, with a combination of aggressive hitting and intelligent batting, enabled Theale to post a very competitive score.

Thatchams bowlers earlier in the day had bowl good line and length as Theales openers Grist and Malik struggle to score at a rate greater than 2 runs per over. Matt Taylor and Nick Voller both beat the bat on numerous occasions, however the only reward for the opening pair was the dismissal of Grist for 13 caught behind by Young of Voller (1-25 from 12).

A change in bowling saw the introduction of 15 year old Aaron Voller and Nathan Redmond (3-51) who both had an immediate effect on the game with Redmond removing Osborn and Voller removing Malik with the score only on 58. Wigmore (47) was joined by Holder (20) and the Theale pair posted a 4th wicket stand of 59 but Voller’s efforts was rewarded as he broke the partnership, removed both batsmen leaving Theale 128 for 5 and Aaron Voller with figures of 3 for 39.

As the game entered its final quarter control tipped in Theale’s favour as Thatcham failed to capitalise on their good work. Although further wickets fell Thatcham failed to control the run rate as Theale turn 135 for 6 into 232 for 8 with Dimmack (44 not out) providing the back bone to Theale’s late runfest.

As with the previous week Thatcham’s batsmen committed the cardinal sin of ‘getting a start’ and not going on to post a match winning score with the top order Watts (14), Edwards (20) and Lewis (10) all looking in good form, with Theale’s Dimmack (3 for 46) continuing on from his batting exploits removing 3 of Thatchams top 4 batsmen. By the 18th over Thatcham were 83 for 4 and, proving wickets could be kept in hand, on track to challenge the Theale total.

Things swung back Thatcham’s way as youngster Peter Spriggs was joined by skipper Bird and built what look like a winning 5th wicket stand of 98 over the next 22 overs. Bird (39) had every right to feel unlucky to be dismissed as he struck his counterpart, Theale’s skipper Cook (4 for 41), back past the stumps at a rate undetectable to the human eye; his only mistake was to hit the ball in the air. Because Cook, while ‘evading from being hit’, was struck by the ball directly in his right hand and held onto the catch.

Once Bird was dismissed Thatcham’s response melted away as the final 5 wickets fell for 6 runs. 16 year old Spriggs finally falling for a fine 66 and Thatcham ending their innings on 187 with 5 balls left in the game.
