Thatcham 2nd XI continued their improved form with a comfortable 10 wicket win over Sonning on Saturday in Division 4B of the Thames Valley Cricket League.

With the hint of rain in the air and having won the toss Sonning decided to bat first, trying to maximum points on a day not ideal for the completion of a game of cricket. Thatcham took the initiative early on with Liversidge (2-36) and Green (1-47) reducing Sonning to 32 for 3 within the first 10 overs. However Thatcham’s promising start was short lived as the run rate started to balloon out of their control with A Sohail and S Raqeeb both capitilising on a procession of bad deliveries, building a 4th wicket partnership of 73 in only 10 overs.

As often the case, a change of bowling was accompanied with a change of fortune as P Moore removed Sohail for 42 in his second over with the score on 105. Thatcham never looked back from this point as Taylor (1-33) removed S Raqeeb 15 runs later for a hard hitting 55 and Moore ripping through the Sonning tail, with a spell that wins admirers and fans, finishing with figures of 6 for 16 from 8.3 overs.

Thatcham’s response was nothing but clinical with the inform Simon Lewis and his opening partner Alistair Howell amassing their second century partnership in as many games as they chased down Sonning’s modest total within 25 overs. Lewis was particularly injurious to the Sonning bowling striking the ball around the ground with Howell taking a more watchful and subtle approach. Both methods paid dividends with Lewis striking a mighty 6 to take Thatcham past Sonning’s total to accolades and applause of his team mates.

Lewis and Howell both walked from the field of play knowing they’d had a good day at the office with Lewis finishing 78 not out and Howell, who should be particularly happy with his Thatcham maiden half century, finishing 51 not out.
