Thatcham 2nd XI’s up and down season continued as they recorded a 4 wicket victory over North Maidenhead on Saturday, with a much improved display compared with week’s disappointing display.

Thatchams skipper Stephen Bird continued his consistently bad calling as he lost another toss and was asked to field on the hottest day of the year so far. Father and Son pairing of Nick and Aaron Voller were thrown the new ball, the seventh opening pair of the season, and provided Thatcham with the control they have lacked in previous weeks as they delivered the first 12 overs at under 2 runs per over, with Aaron claiming the wicket of Qayyum for 8.

A change of bowling saw much of the same as North Maidenhead reach 20 overs with 54 on the board and 2 wickets down. North Maidenhead then claimed the ascendancy as Thatcham’s bowlers lost focus, allowing skipper Asghar (38) and Joshi (32) to score freely adding 52 runs in 9 overs until the latter was brilliantly run out by A Voller who returned a ball from the boundary directly into the hands of keeper Jack Young who made not mistake.

North Maidenhead seemed well placed at 135 for 3 with 16 overs remaining however the re-introduction of Aaron Voller combining with the every reliable Perry Moore soon paid dividends as North Maidenhead slumped to 155 for 7 in a 7 over spell. North Maidenhead’s remaining batsmen tried to reach the obligatory 200 mark with A Javid adding 16 runs from the number 9 spot but those around him could not assist as North Maidenhead were eventually bowled out for 178 in the 49th over with Aaron Voller finishing with his first senior 5 wicket haul and figures of 5 for 34.

Thatcham’s response was safe but lacked momentum as they easily reach 29 without loss from the first 12 overs. However I Ilias’s nagging line and length soon provided reward for the home side as he removed openers Howell (11) and Spriggs (17) within two overs of each other, with Wylie coming and going soon after Thatcham were on the brink of losing control as they reached 52 for 3 from 22 overs.

Tom Mahoney joined Jack Young at the wicket and added the type of momentum that Thatcham lacked in the early stages of their innings as he helped add 71 runs in 12 overs. Mahoney’s enthusiasm proving his downfall as he turned for one of his trademark two’s only to be run out by a direct hit from the deep for 16.
But Thatcham’s real strength was with Jack Young who, after a shaky start, began to play fluently, striking the ball cleanly over the infield, passing his 50 with a fine leg-side over the top drive, finally falling for fine 63.

Thatcham were still not guaranteed the win at 138 for 5 as skipper Steve Bird joined Nick Monger still requiring 41 for victory. Monger, with his uncomplicated style, settled any nerves in the Thatcham camp as he struck some hefty blows until the returning I Ilias (3-53) bowled him off his pads but not before Monger had added 30 runs, leaving Steve Bird and Nick Voller the simplistic task of scoring 9 runs in 8 overs, which they completed 2 overs of Mongers departure.
