Thatcham 2nd XI made the perfect start to the second half of the season as they took maximum points in their Division 4B encounter with local rivals Falkland on Saturday.

The toss was once again a formality as skipper Stephen Bird incorrectly called and was asked to bat by stand in skipper Sam Trumper on a hot and sultry day. Thatcham’s openers started in a more positive mood than last week with Howell especially keen to ensure the bad ball was dealt with in the appropriate manner while Spriggs continued his excellent form at the other end, going about his business in a calm, unflustered manner.

Howell was first to go edging Marson to Trumper at slip for 18 bringing Eddie Wylie to the crease who was in an even more positive mood striking 5 fours from the first 9 ball he faced as he combined with Spriggs to plundered 43 runs from the next 7 overs. Wylie was always going to find it difficult to maintain such an explosive start, slowing dramatically before he was bowled by the impressive Falkland Youngster M Mortimer for 25.

Des Hartley-Russell (34) joined Peter Spriggs at the crease in a partnership worth 60 runs as they both look comfortable on the slow none responsive track with Spriggs passing the 50 mark for the third time 5 innings. Spriggs looking set for a long day at the crease fell foul to a communication mix up and was needlessly run out attempting to make his ground for a well worked 53.

With the demise of Spriggs Falkland’s bowlers took charge as Trumper (2-70), Mortimer (3-33) and Higgins (1-21) reduced Thatcham to 168 for 7 in a 6 over spell that saw 5 wickets fall for 33 runs. Thatcham’s skipper Bird managed to steady the ship as he worked with the lower over to help Thatcham past the 200 mark and onward towards a more respectable total, Bird finally falling to the returning Marson for a much needed 45. The final pairing of Kevin Liversidge and Aaron Voller remained steadfast for the last 4 overs of the innings adding 14 runs taking the Thatcham score to 231 for 9.

Thatchams turn with the ball started perfectly with the spinning pair of Moore (2-32) and Monger (2-27) taking advantage of the old ball as monger removed Trumper and Chapman before the score had reached 15. Piper and Thomas repaired the damage in a calm and intelligent manner, taking advantage of the short boundaries as they added 94 for the third wicket. Liversidge (2-46) made the break through removing the bail of Thomas’s (37) off stump, however it was the exceptional fielding of Des Hartley-Russell that proved the turning point of the game as his return throw from the deep was welcomed by Liversidge who removed the bails to run out Piper for 62.

The bowling side, as with Falkland in the first innings, took charge of the game as the next 6 wickets fell for 63 runs, reducing Falkland to 173 for 9. It was left to the guile of Perry Moore to give Thatcham the maximum 25 points as he removed Pitcher, clean bowled for 12 with Falkland 2 short of the 200 mark.
