Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Stoke Green on Sat 24 May 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 40 runs

Match report Thatcham threw away a golden opportunity to beat the current pacesetters in TVL 2b as they were spun out by Stoke Green's two outstanding spinners on Saturday at Brownsfield.
Stoke Green skipper Sukh Dhillon won the toss and with rain around he surprisingly chose to bat first. Simpson and Khan strode out to face the young new ball attack of Callum Johnson (0-23) and Josh Winfield (1-44) and both lads bowled well in the face of some vicious intent, especially from former Farnham Royal opener Simpson, who looked to deal in boundaries only. Winfield deservedly claimed his scalp, caught at deep mid-wicket by the safe hands of Scott Gibson. Sri Lankan Weerasinghe joined Khan in a useful partnership before Chris Bird tempted Khan down the track and Chris Wright whipped the bails off and the opener departed for 43. Bird then caught and bowled Desai, which was the last success the home side were to have. Weerasinghe (52*) and Arjan (16*) took the visitors to 135-3 from 37.1 overs before the rain came and forced the players off the field.
With a couple of hours lost and some good work by the home side players, the umpires were able to declare the conditions playable, by which time Stoke Green's innings was completed, leaving Thatcham 33 overs which to get to the target of 135. A comfortable task you would have thought, but the visitors had other ideas!
Opening with the combined left arm spin of Aziz and Butt and with silly mid-on and silly mid-off under the helmets from the start, Stoke Green strangled the home side's batting into submission. It was a sorry procession of wickets given to the visitors by an array of injudicious shots from an experienced Thatcham batting line up that should know better. Only a couple of the batsmen were actually 'got out' as the rest just tried to hit the spinners over the ropes, perishing time and time again, although credit must go to the bowlers for the pressure exerted, as very rarely was a loose ball on offer. Both finished with deserved 5 wicket hauls, Aziz 5-29 and Butt 5-62 to give their side another 25 points to leave them with 75 points from a possible 75 points after 3 games.
Stoke Green look the part and any side that comes up against them will have their work cut out. Early season favourites to go up for sure.
As for Thatcham, it's a draw, a rain out and a loss, so the visit to Boyne Hill next Saturday looks a must to get a much needed win under their belt and get the season started.
