Match report Thatcham turned in their worst batting performance for many a year at Boyne Hill on Saturday, shot out for 40 and on the end of an 8 wicket hammering, returning down the M4 with a solitary point for their troubles.
Skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that was always going to move about a little but having chased poorly on the last 3 occasions, Johnson felt it was time to try something different and set a total. At drinks after 26 overs with his side 36-6 he was possibly thinking slightly differently. Taking nothing away from the Boyne Hill seamers as Wasim Maharoof and Martin Preston bowled superbly, but it was once again a succession of ill-judged shots which put the visitors in the mire. The fact that eight of the ten dismissals were caught tell it's own story! It was a pitch that required batters to graft and only Rider and Johnson were able to apply themselves in the correct manner. Maharoof finished with 6-25 from his 15 overs of left arm seam and Preston returned tidy figures of 2-10 from his 13 overs of gentle away swing.
It was going to require something extraordinary to turn the game around and although Callum Johnson and Scott Gibson bowled with good discipline, they rarely threatened to break through. Gibson picked up the wicket of Abassi and the introduction of Tim Mahoney got the visitors a point when he cunningly deceived Rana with a slower delivery, leaving Boyne Hill to reach their small target for the loss of 2 wickets in the 16th over.
Thatcham go back to the drawing board and a lot of hard work in the nets during the week as they prepare for the visit of Sonning to Brownsfield on Saturday.
