Match report Thatcham put last weeks horror show at Boyne Hill behind them and finally got off the mark with a comfortable 6 wicket win over Sonning at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Winning the toss, skipper Duncan Johnson inserted the visitors and Mark Roca and Gary Phillips got their side off to a good start with a half century stand inside the first 10 overs as Thatcham rued dropped catches and basic fielding errors. The home side stuck at it though and it was Phillips who went first, playing on to Callum Johnson for 25 and then Bird had the dangerous Roca lbw for 16. Johnson picked up his 2nd wicket, Duncan Parr brilliantly snaffled by Josh Winfield in the gully for 0 and when Shaker went walkabouts Jack Young whipped the bails off to give John Williams success in his 2nd over. 54-0 had quickly become 65-4 and the spinners began to turn the screw. Williams took a superb catch off his own bowling to dismiss Mohammed for 27 and then Bird took centre stage, bowling Ellery for 15, trapping Harris lbw for 5 and then bowling Stevens for 8 as the wheels came off the Sonning innings. Krishnappa landed a couple of hefty blows in a decent partnership with Reilly until the latter lost patience and skied Williams to Josh O'Flynn for 15. Williams then ended the innings, Khan smashing one back at the bowler who held on and the visitors were all out in the 43rd over for 147. Callum Johnson bowled well up top with 2-43 from his 10 overs and John Williams returned 4-46 from 12.4, but it was the veteran Bird who was the pick of the attack with excellent figures of 4-26 from his 16 overs.
Bearing in mind Thatcham's recent woes with the bat, a good start was essential, but 3rd ball of the reply disaster struck with a yes/no/maybe and off went Simon Rider, run out for 0. Josh Winfield quickly followed for 5 and at 25-2 in the 5th over, the sense of deja vu was overwhelming. It was down to Thatcham's two big players to really deliver the goods and steady the ship and the supremely talented Felix Hartley-Russell was joined at the crease by his experienced skipper and the two set about the job in hand. Johnson was the perfect foil for Hartley-Russell's belligerent hitting as the 50 partnership was reached and passed. The score was on 88 when Ellery returned to the attack with immediate success, Johnson feathering a leg side catch to his opposite number Reilly behind the stumps and the Thatcham skipper had to depart for a well crafted 30. Chris Wright was then bowled 2nd ball by Mohammed for 0 and it was now vital that Hartley-Russell saw the job through. He found fantastic support in Jack Young who timed the ball beautifully from ball one, taking the pressure of Hartley-Russell at the other end. Sonning were to enjoy no more success as the two Thatcham young guns took their side to victory with a superb partnership of 60, Young not out 24 and Hartley-Russell unbeaten on a brilliant 84, including 13 fours, in a vital knock for his side.
Thatcham claimed a welcome 20 points to life them off the bottom of the table and travel to Burnham next week with a lot more confidence and self belief.
