Match report Thatcham find themselves propping up the rest on TVL 2b after a narrow 35 run defeat at the hands of Burnham 2's on Saturday.
Burnham skipper Asif won the toss and chose to bat and the formidable new ball attack of 6ft 4" muscleman Josh Winfield and 6ft 5" Aussie paceman Lachlan McKenzie opened up for the visitors. The ripped Winfield made the breakthrough in the 9th over, Ali caught and bowled for 15. Nawaz was then well caught down the leg side by Jack Young for 7 which left Raja and Basharat to rebuild the innings with a good partnership of 45. The introduction of John Williams ended this, courtesy of a fine catch from Johnson low down at extra cover, Basharat departing for 34. Burnham kept compiling useful partnerships in the middle and lower order and it was difficult for Thatcham to stem the flow of runs. Scott Gibson made two useful breakthroughs, Nadeem well caught by Winfield for 23 and then Raja dismissed in the same manner for a painstaking 50 from 45 overs. Chris Bird and Jack Young combined for two stumpings taking care of Dasra for 26 and M Ahmed for 9. It was a brutal innings by Waqar Ahmed that really took the game away from the visitors as he smashed a quickfire 58 which included five 6's and four 4's, the unfortunate Bird bearing the brunt of the assault which saw his last 3 overs disappear for 44 runs from the Ahmed blade, enabling the home side to declare on 234-7 from 51 overs.
History tells you Thatcham don't really bat well at Burnham and Pakistani pro Waqar Ahmed has certainly had more success than most against the West Berkshire side. Soon enough he was making inroads, Simon Rider caught and bowled without troubling the scorers and Josh O'Flynn then played all round a full Ahmed delivery and saw his stumps rearranged for 7. It was once again left to the talented ex Eton schoolboy Felix Hartley-Russell and skipper Duncan Johnson to get the reply back on track. Hartley-Russell reached another fine 50 and the partnership was 44 when he was bowled by a ripper from Bashir. This signalled an all too familiar middle order collapse as Jamie Young went the very next ball and Josh Winfield soon followed him. The visitors then had a little bad fortune as skipper Johnson bottom edged a sweep off S Ahmed into his boot and a simple catch looped up to the keeper to dismiss the experienced left hander for 16. A quality partnership of 63 between Jack Young and Scott Gibson got Thatcham back in the game until Gibson was superbly caught in the slips of Waqar for 25. Jack Young was next to go courtesy of a top delivery from M Ahmed, Waqar taking the catch at slip and the young Thatcham keeper had to go for a fine 40. The visitors refused to lie down though and John Williams counter attacked brilliantly, smashing Waqar back over his head three times in the same over. Thatcham now found themselves needing six an over for an unlikely victory but the fine cameo came to an end for Williams who perished on the long off boundary trying to repeat a 'six' from the previous delivery, Bashir taking a fine catch to dismiss the hard hitting left hander for 33. Last man McKenzie joined Chris Bird, but M Ahmed dismissed the Aussie for 0, leaving a frustrated Bird unbeaten on 5 and Thatcham 35 runs short with just over 5 overs still to bowl.
It was a courageous effort form the visitors but not quite enough. Burnham took the 25 points and left Thatcham with 7 points, which was then amended to 6 points as one was docked for slow over rate, just to rub some more salt into the wounds. Thatcham entertain Chiswick & Latymer at Brownsfield on Saturday and only a win will suffice. The in-form Hartley Russell will be missing as is Chris Wright, but Callum Johnson is available again and Tom Mahoney could be in line for a call up after his brilliant 130* for the 2's on Saturday.
