Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Chiswick & Latymer on Sat 21 Jun 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 60 runs
Match report
A magnificent century from ex-Eton schoolboy Felix Hartley-Russell and a 5 wicket haul for the veteran left arm spinner Chris Bird were the highlights of a scintillating 60 run Thatcham victory over Chiswick & Latymer at Brownsfield on Saturday.
Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a straw coloured wicket that looked perfect for batting. At 47-4 it could have been another batting disaster as Chiswick's overseas pro Vitas Tokas, a pacy Indian who plays in the same Delhi side as Gambhir, Kohli and Sehwag, put the Thatcham top order to the sword. Tom Mahoney, Simon Rider and Johnson were all nailed by Tokas and worse was to follow when Josh Winfield was involved in a mix up and was run out for 7. It was wicketkeeper Jack Young who stood up to the plate and together with Hartley-Russell was instrumental in turning the game on it's head. What followed was fantastic to watch as Hartley-Russell bullied and bludgeoned his way past 50 and Young was the opposite, busy at the crease and pushing singles, finding gaps in the field with ease. The young pair put on 135 runs, Young passing a deserved 50 before he was stumped off the spin of Chopra. Hartley-Russell carried on regardless, reaching 3 figures to a standing ovation from all around the ground. It was a fabulous display and he made the Chiswick keeper Glover pay dearly for a nonchalant one handed attempt at a catch off the bowling of Tokas when Hartley-Russell was in the 30's! He finally bowed out, caught for 123 off the spin of Rohit Jhanjhariya. The Thatcham lower order bunted a few boundaries towards to the end but were dismissed in 51 overs for 235 valuable runs. Tokas was inevitably the pick of the Chiswick attack, returning figures of 22 overs, 6-82.
Thatcham were now fully intent on a 25 point victory and a tight start was imperative. Chris Bird and Duncan Johnson opened up with the old ball and men round the bat, hoping to restrict the visitors to around 30 from the first 10 overs and the plan worked beautifully, Chiswick 22-0 from 10! The new ball was then taken and Callum Johnson broke through 4 balls later, Glover edging to the safe hands of Chris Bird at 1st slip and Thatcham were on their way. Josh O'Flynn steamed in up the hill to partner Johnson in the new ball attack and he broke through in his 2nd over, O Simpson edging through to Jack Young for 23. The next wicket was the big one though as Indians Rohit Jhanjhariya and Vitas Tokas were the prize scalps. Tokas came in swinging the start and really took the game to Thatcham. The partnership had reached 99 when the re-introduction of Chris Bird bought an instant reward, Jhanjhariya struck on the back pad, a huge appeal and up went the umpires finger to send the Chiswick number 3 back to the pavilion for 39. Chiswick 149-3 through 33 overs and still well in the game. A lot was now riding on Tokas as the twin left arm spin of Bird and John Williams got tucked in to the Chiswick middle order who crumbled badly. Noble went without scoring, Bhattia for 1 and when Tokas was caught by John Winfield off Bird for 66, the writing was on the wall. Bird then took out Sunny Singh, lbw for 0 and Chopra was bowled off his pads for 5, leaving John Williams to bring up the victory as Malik was stumped for 1 and last man G Simpson was snaffled in the gully 1st ball by Bird and the visitors had completely capitulated for 175, adding just 26 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Thatcham were ecstatic, 25 big points to move them off the bottom of the table and a big shot of confidence for the trip to Aldershot on Saturday.
