Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Slough 2 on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 54 runs

Match report The 1st XI Trouts continued their resurgence on Saturday win a hard fought 54 run victory over Slough's second string to make it 3 wins from the last 4 games and propel them to within 9 points of 2nd place in Thames Valley Div 2b.
Winning the toss skipper Duncan Johnson had no hesitation in having a bat and although Josh Winfield went cheaply, Simon Rider and Felix Hartley Russell put together a stand of 94 in good time with former Eton schoolboy Hartley Russell in the form of his life. He battered ten 4's and a 6 in his 61 and at the halfway point in the season, has amassed 391 runs at a average of 65.17 and is really blossoming into a very fine number 3 bat for the Brownsfield side. Rider meanwhile had quietly passed 50 and a 45 run partnership with skipper Johnson before he perished to the leg spin of Shrikrishna for 59. The home side were well placed for an assault with 150 on the board in the 33rd over but the desire for quick runs led to Johnson (16) and Tom Mahoney (6) being dismissed. Youngsters Des Hartley Russell (18) and Callum Johnson (25) then came together in a very entertaining 43 run partnership, the younger Hartley Russell clearing the ropes for two maximums and the younger Johnson smashing four 4's, but they were both dismissed enabling John Williams to light the fuse for some real end of innings fireworks. He swaggered in like a gunslinger entering a saloon and proceeded to smash 37 from just 12 balls with three 4's and three towering 6's coming from his smoking gun. Stephen Bird added fine support with a quick 12 enabling Johnson to call time on the innings with 251 on the board from 47 overs. Shrikrishnan bowled a fine spell of leg spin to finish with 5-80 for the visitors.
Repeating the tactics of the previous 25 point victory over Chiswick, Chris Bird and Duncan Johnson opened up with the old ball with the emphasis on keeping things tight for the first 10 overs. Once again the tactics were spot on, just 26 runs coming from a tidy start, only this time 3 wickets had been taken. Jetty (6) edged Bird to Johnson at gully and then Johnson bowled the dangerous Gheyas Khan for 16 and Sami Kazim without scoring. The skipper then ran through the visitors middle order, both Raza (0) and Abass (24) were caught by Callum Johnson, Syed was run out for 10 and then Ali (0) was stumped and Said Kazim (0) was lbw to give the Thatcham skipper his 6th wicket of the innings. The visitors were 86-8 and staring down the barrel. Whilst this drama was going on, the diminutive Shrikrishna, who had come in at 3, was backing up his bowling effort with the bat, passing 50 and looking to be a real thorn in Thatcham's side. When he was joined by his skipper Fasil Noor, who is a far better bat than his entrance at number 10 would suggest, they both batted beautifully and attempted to drag their side out of the situation they had created. The new ball was taken and seamers Callum Johnson and Des Hartley Russell introduced, but the Slough batters seemed to like the extra pace on the ball and this proved a fruitless experiment. Scott Gibson came on and bowled tidily but still no breaking of the partnership. 96 runs were added by Shrikrishnan and Noor and it took a special delivery from the returning Chris Bird to end Noor's stay as he played at a drifting delivery which then spun sharply taking the outside edge to the waiting hands of Felix Hartley Russell at slip and the Slough skipper had to depart for a fine 42. The home side still needed the final wicket and with 9 overs remaining, it looked a good bet. Slough's number 11 Bhatti looked a fine player though and both he and Shrikrishnan looked to bat out time. It was Bird again who supplied the telling blow, Shrikrishnan driving uppishly at a flighted delivery and Tom Mahoney took a superb catch low down at extra cover to win the match. Shrikrishnan looked devastated but it was fine effort for his side, 84 runs to go with earlier 5 wicket haul and a deserved man of the match accolade. The spin of Chris Bird, 14 overs 3-51 and Duncan Johnson, 15 overs 6-56 had delivered 25 valuable points to the West Berkshire side who entertain Bagshot in a reverse of the opening weekends fixtures at Brownsfield on Saturday.
