Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Bagshot on Sat 12 Jul 2014 at 1.00
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham moved up to 4th in TVL 2b with a hard fought draw over Bagshot on Saturday at Brownsfield.
Winning the toss, Thatcham skipper Duncan Johnson had no hesitation in having a bat on, what looked, a beautiful straw coloured Brownsfield track. Openers Scott Gibson and Peter Spriggs made a steady start against Bagshot skipper Matt Pettet and the fiery Will Grinstead. Gibson then got suckered in to his favourite pull shot and was caught for 7 with Spriggs following in exactly the same fashion for 14 as Grinstead made the breakthroughs. Ex-Eton schoolboy Felix Hartley Russell then joined up with Tom Mahoney and they produced an excellent partnership of 72 runs against the pace of Grinstead and the spin of Nick Berridge. Hartley-Russell, in the form of his life, compiled his 5th half-century in a row before he was caught at long off by Grinstead off Berridge for 66. Tom Mahoney then lost patience and was bowled by Berridge for 23 leaving the home side 124-4 through 30 overs. The game was in the balance, but the experience of Chris Wright and the youthful exuberance of Josh Winfield produced the partnership of the innings. They added 76 together, Wright was watchful and selective whilst Winfield just stood and smashed Berridge out of Brownsfield on several occasions. Wright had reached 32 when he hit a towering catch out to deep midwicket which Andy Davis judged perfectly to send the Thatcham keeper back to the pavilion. Winfield continued hitting big until the returning Will Grinstead re-arranged his stumps, one short of a well deserved half century. John Williams added a quickfire 18 and Callum Johnson hit well at the end of the innings to finish unbeaten on 26. The real fireworks were right at the end however as Thatcham vice captain and top wicket taker Chris Bird attempted a sweep off Berridge and somehow the ball passed through the gap in the grille of his helmet and smashed into his cheekbone. Bird disappeared quickly off to hospital, knowing he would surely play a big part if his side were to win the game. Thatcham reached 252-8 from 50 overs, enabling Duncan Johnson to declare the innings at that point in proceedings.
With Bird still in the minor injuries unit being stitched up, Johnson opened up with the old ball together with John Williams. A tight first 9 overs, just 29 on the board, bought the wicket of Mikey Davis who edged Williams to Chris Wright for 21. This was to be the last success for the home side for 20 overs however as Chris Hollely and Jack Grinstead produced the partnership of the match to put their side in the driving seat. 104 runs was the result before the introduction of Winfield saw the end of Grinstead, caught by Spriggs for a fine 38. Dunnage came and went without scoring, Scott Gibson taking a good catch in the deep off Williams and then the big wicket of Hollely turned the game around. He attempted to smash Winfield over mid off but only found the safe hands of Felix Hartley Russell and the Bagshot number 3 was on his way back for 80. Jeremy Davis then perished in the deep, trying to boss John Williams but only finding Josh O'Flynn at long on. Bagshot now 154-5 through 35 overs, needing another 100 runs from 15 overs at just over 6 an over. In came the big hitting Nick Berridge and he immediately made his presence felt, clearing the ropes 3 times, John Williams the unlucky bowler. It had reached the time when Chris Bird was able to bowl after missing an hour and he duly delivered the telling blow, Berridge going for another maximum and Peter Spriggs taking a good catch. Thatcham breathed a huge sigh of relief, Berridge gone for 40 and along with him the game as the home side sniffed an unlikely victory. Bartlett was caught by Winfield to give Williams his 4th wicket of the match and Bagshot were 214-7 with 5 overs to go. Bird and Williams finished off for Thatcham as the experienced head of Andy Davis guided his side to the draw. He finished unbeaten on 11 with Passfied unbeaten on 6, Bagshot 226-7 after the 50 overs.
It was a fine effort by the bowlers as the pitch was an absolute belter. Thatcham rued the fact that Chris Bird could only return in time to bowl 6 overs and that was a big factor in the result. Thatcham picked up 13 points from the draw and Bagshot 9.
Next up for the Trouts is a trip to bottom side Hayes and they will be targeting a win to keep up the recent momentum.
