Sonning v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 09 Aug 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost By 102 runs

Match report Thatcham travelled to Sonning on Saturday and lost by 102 runs in a game they were completely outplayed in every department.

An important toss was won by Sonning skipper Ollie Clayson and he chose to bat first and set the tone for the afternoon by despatching Lachlan McKenzie's opening delivery to the boundary. Thatcham's seamers have struggled all year to take wickets and although Callum Johnson bowled tidily in his spell it wasn't until Josh O'Flynn bowled Ward for 35 in the 19th over that the visitors had any success. With Thatcham's leading wicker taker Chris Bird missing it was down to Duncan Johnson and John Williams to provide the spin threat and they did an admirable job in clawing their side back into the game. Johnson caught and bowled Aussie Ellery for 12 and when Williams bowled Clayson for 52, suddenly the game threatened to turn. Ray was then well caught by Jack Young for 3 off Johnson and the same bowler then removed the dangerous Sandford, caught and bowled for 22. Sonning were now 148-5 through 36 overs and for the first time in the afternoon, the visitors were in the game. It took an excellent partnership from the vastly experienced Sonning pair of JJ Harris and Mark Richards to dampen Thatcham's spirit as they compiled 44 runs together in a 9 over spell that could of gone either way until Williams bowled Harris for 28. A change in the bowling was probably justified, but Johnson kept going and rued the decision as his 14 overs 3-56 became 17 overs 3-91 as Richards smashed the Thatcham skipper for 35 runs in 3 overs. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but a change to one of the seamers should have taken place. John Williams bowled his best spell of the season at the other end though picking up 2-42 from 13 overs and when Sonning skipper Clayson called his players in, they had reached 233-6 declared in 50 overs, Richards unbeaten on 46, with fours 4's and three 6's.
Thatcham now needed to chase well but their achilles heel struck again, they just cannot seem to get ahead of the game. The first 10 overs yielded just 21 runs against the Sonning left arm pair of Zubair Khan and Gullam Abbas. In comparison, Sonning were 44-0 at the same stage. Spin was introduced early and fresh from an eight wicket haul the previous week, Shaker struck straight away, bowling Josh O'Flynn for 10. Scott Gibson was next to go for 25 in a carbon copy dismissal and when 'gun bat' Felix Hartley Russell was caught at short leg for 8, Thatcham's reply was wobbling. 2nd change seamer Jackson was introduced and he ripped out the middle order. Jack Young was caught for 5 and although Josh Winfield and Jamie Young stuck around, it said a lot that their partnership of 27 was the 2nd highest of the innings, ending when Winfield holed out on the boundary for 29. The in-form John Williams couldn't follow up his superb bowling as he was bowled by Ellery for 1 and Jamie Young followed shortly after for 12 as Jackson took his 3rd wicket from his 7 over spell. Thatcham were now 99-7 through 35 overs and the sole remaining aim was to try and hold out for a draw and deny Sonning a massive 25 point win, but with 15 overs left it was a tough ask. It was here that Sonning have the one thing that their visitors lacked, an end of innings destroyer in Pakistani left arm quick Zubair Khan and he duly delivered for his side. Duncan Johnson edged to keeper Sandford for 3 and it was left to Callum Johnson and Simon Rider to attempt the impossible. Both stuck to the task as overs passed by as they compiled the highest partnership of the innings. The score had reached 133 when Abbas returned for a solitary over and he bowled Rider for 4. Last man McKenzie survived the final delivery of the over and just 3 now remained. Young Johnson saw off a maiden from Shaker but it was inevitable that Clayson would throw the ball to Khan and although the first ball was down the leg side, the second was arrow straight and McKenzie's stumps were everywhere, Thatcham all out for 133 with 10 balls left in the innings.
It was the least Sonning deserved, they played all the cricket and jumped above their rivals with a big 25 point haul. Thatcham's 5 point return has left them 2nd bottom, 7 points adrift of Hayes and 11 points behind Sonning.
There are 4 games to play, Thatcham face Burnham 2's at Brownsfield on Saturday before they travel to Chiswick & Latymer, then Aldershot at home and a final trip to bottom side Slough 2's on the final weekend. They will have to dust themselves down and start to produce some performances if they are to keep their place in Division 2b.
