Yateley 2 v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 2XI- Saturday on Sat 17 May 2014 at 1.00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 3 Wickets
Match report
Thatcham Town Cricket Club 2nd XI v Yateley 2nd XI
Thames Valley League Division 4B
Summary
Yateley: 170 all out (Perry Moore 5-42)
Thatcham: 171 for 7 (Alistair Howell 82 not out)
Thatcham won by 3 wkts
Early season nerves were evident in Thatcham 2nd XI victory over Yateley 2nd XI as Thatcham stumbled past Yateleys modest total in Division 4B of the Thames Valley Cricket League.
Winning the toss, Yateley decided to have first go on what look like a good early season track and the opening pair of Soames and Maxfield took full advantage of both the track and some rusty fielding from Thatcham as they built an opening partnership of 88, however things were not all doom and gloom for Thatcham as 28 overs had past and several chances had been created.
Fortune began to favour Thatcham when Perry Moore joined Tim Mahoney in the bowling attack as Tim Mahoney removed Maxfield for 39 with a delivery that pitched on leg and took off. Mahoney then added to his wicket tally as he had Soames (48) stumped by Jack Young with the score on 101.
Wickets continued to tumble as Moore started his habitual hunt for end of season silverware claiming 4 wickets in 4 overs, while ably accompanied by Monger (3-40) who was imitating Moore’s success with 3 wickets of his own, after taking the mantle from Mahoney who had completed his marathon spell with figures of 17 overs 2 for 33.
The 9th wicket fell with the score on 146 but some mature batting from Youngsters Mitchell (10) and Mcgowan (13) took Yateley towards a more respectable score before Moore struck for the final time finishing with figures of 14.01 over 5 for 42 and leaving Yateley 170 all out.
Thatcham’s response could not have started more poorly, failing to come to terms with the true but slow track as Yateley’s Captain, Pienaar, ripped through the top order leaving Thatcham 20 for 3. Thatcham’s pairing of Stuart Gregory and Alistair Howell both took personal responsibility for rebuilding Thatcham innings as they combined in a partnership of 80 before Gregory (43) struck at long hop straight at mid-wicket.
Thatcham again began to wobble as they lost another 2 quick wickets, with the score 1 run shy of 120 and only 4 wickets left, Captain Bird joined Howell at the crease, both players milking the bowling to add 33 runs in the next 6 overs before Bird followed many of the batsman before him forgetting the slowness in the track and hitting Pieneer (4-41) straight to long on.
Mahoney (10 not out) restored order as he completed a fine days work helping Howell amass the final 20 runs Thatcham required for victory. However it was Howell’s calm and measured approach to batting that saved the day for Thatcham as he left the field 82 not out and Thatcham 20 points better off.
