Thatcham 2nd XI entertained Sonning 2nd XI on Saturday and not disappoint as the two sides produced a thriller that went down to the very last ball.

After losing the toss Thatcham were invited to bat and soon found themselves in trouble as some inspirational fielding combined with the perfect length bowled by Sonning’s opening pair of D Rintail (2-40) and A Ray (2-17) that reduced Thatcham to 44 for 4 within the first 23 overs.

Only the stubborn batting of Peter Spriggs, back from Wellington College for the half term, survived the Sonning initial onslaught. Skipper Stephen Bird joined Spriggs at the crease and they started to return some normality to the Thatcham innings as they combined in a stand of 35 before Spriggs (33) succumb to another excellent piece of fielding as Hill snapped up a superb low leg side catch behind the stumps off Smith leaving Thatcham on 79 for 5.

Things got worse as Bird (21) fell next over to his opposite number Richards (3-52) whilst successfully defending a viciously rearing ball only for it to bounce back onto his stumps. With things looking terminal for Thatcham, batting the full 52 overs was the order of the day and Thatcham’s lower order delivered as Tristan Allen, ending the day 62 not out and Tommy Mather 15 not out added 43 runs in the last 5 overs to give Thatcham a potentially defendable target.

Sonning’s batting continued where their bowlers left off as they showed none of the nervousness exhibited by Thatcham’s batsmen racing to 44 within the first 7 overs until Nick Monger removed Jameel for 11. Philips soon followed for a well worked 42 and Ray for 9 as Sonning continued they march towards the Thatcham total.

Saad (35) and Dewey (18) look as if they had broken the back of the chase only for Saad’s impatience to finish the job proved his down fall as he tried once too often to dominate Monger, stumped by Bartholomew attempting to emulating his previous ball six. This wicket proved the turning point for Thatcham as they reduced Sonning from 122 for 4 to 124 for 7 in three overs, Monger the pick of the bowlers, ending with figures of 16 overs 5 for 47.

Thatcham sensed victory as Sonning’s batsmen relinquished their attacking approach, however with 18 overs still available either side was capable of winning. Thatcham appeared to be edging the game as Simon Lewis’s (10 overs 2 for 12) medium pace proved unplayable removing Dewey and Smith to leave Sonning on 133 in the 35th over.

Thatcham didn’t help their cause as the 9th wicket proved problematic with D Rintail dropped at mid-wicket in the 43rd over. The 9th wicket finally fell in the 47th over as D Rintail was run out trying to ensure C Rintail remained on strike for the final over.

With Sonning requiring 10 runs for victory from the last over and McKenzie bowling well it seemed Thatcham the more likely to grab the win, however with the fifth delivery passing the batsmen above waist height and eluding the Thatcham wicket keeper 5 runs were added to the total as it struck the boundary rope. Fortunately McKenzie kept his nerve and delivered the next two delivers without incident as both Thatcham, requiring 1 wicket, and Sonning, requiring 2 runs, fell agonisingly short of victory with C Rintail requiring noteworthy mention as he batted 20 overs finishing 19 not out and ensuring a draw for Sonning.
