Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets
Match report
Thatcham Town Cricket Club 2nd XI v Bracknell Cricket Club 1st XI
Thames Valley League Division 4B
Saturday 14th June 2014
Summary
Bracknell: 305 for 9 (Simon Lewis 5-70)
Thatcham: 306 for 3 (Tom Mahoney 130 not out, Simon Lewis 86)
Thatcham Won by 7 Wickets
Thatcham 2nd XI returned to winning ways with an excellent 7 wicket victory over Bracknell 1st XI at Brownsfield on Saturday as they chased down an unlikely 305 for victory.
Thatcham won the toss and elect to field, however things didn’t start well as Thatcham lost opening bowler Matt Taylor to an early injury and ‘soon not be permanent bowler’ Simon Lewis was asked to take up the mantle. The early set back did not however affect Thatcham’s plans as Tim Mahoney (2-80) and Simon Lewis (5-70) kept things tight removing the first 7 Bracknell batsmen before the score had reached 90.
However Thatcham were to fall fool of Bracknell’s real batting strength once again as H Mahmood, who until now had struggled to break loose, was placed in a ‘nothing to lose’ position as S Malik joined him at the crease. H Mahmood then showed what an ex-first class cricketer can do in club cricket as he plundered, with the help of S Malik (37) a further 215 off the next 25 overs.
Thatcham tried to counter Mahmood’s attacking play with a defensive field but could not prevent the sixes raining down as Mahmood passed the 100 mark and then, the 200 before the Bracknell skipper declared with Mahmood on 212 not out, including 20 sixes, and the final total standing at 305 for 9, leaving Thatcham a generous 56 overs to chase this formidable total.
Thatcham’s chase could only be described as perfect as all batsmen contributed to the score however it was a stand of 161 between Simon Lewis and Tom Mahoney that enable Thatcham to chase down the total. Openers Harland and Tom Mahoney started in positive fashion as they took the total to 43 in the first 9 overs before Harland fell for (24).
Lewis and Mahoney then set about the Bracknell attack as they shared a stand of 161 over the next 27 overs. Things were still far from guaranteed when Lewis (86) was dismissed in the 37th over with the score on 204 but provided youngster Tom Mahoney, who was opening for the first time in his Thatcham senior career remained at the other end the chase remained viable.
And Mahoney didn’t disappoint as with support from Simon Gale (31) and Alistair Howell (10 not out) he presented his proud and tearful dad Tim with an early father’s day present, as he plundering the Bracknell bowling passing the 100 mark for the first time in his senior career whilst on his way to a chanceless and career best 130 not out, whilst helping guide Thatcham to victory with 53 overs.
