Thatcham 2nd XI responded to last week’s defeat in positive manner as they took 20 points with victory over local rivals Falkland 3rd XI on Saturday.

Asked to field first by Falkland Thatcham opening bowlers started steadily with Mike Green (2-23) providing the break through, removing Stephenson and Ashworth in the first 10 overs. Thatcham decided a change of bowler was required as Falkland knuckled down on the slow paced track with S Trumper showing the way with a combination of watchful defence and excellent attacking play.

Tim Mahoney (1-31) provided his ever reliable impression of a slow Glen McGrath as his accurate bowling bamboozled Robinson for 12 but Falkland looked in a good position as Trumper maintained a healthy run rate and the score on 84 for 3. Trumper (49), looking set for a long day at the crease, paid the price for a lack of concentration as he left his bat dangling at a ‘wideish’ delivery off Lewis only for the ball to clip the bottom edge of his bat and skipper Bird snapping up the catch behind the stumps.

McKenzie (3-57) returned to the attack with a spell of bowling that firmly put Thatcham in command as he took 3 wickets for 3 runs in 7 overs. Spinner Monger was introduced at the other end to but the unresponsive track allowed Falkland to keep adding runs as the wickets fell. Thatcham needed to stem the runs as McKenzie tired and the ever reliable Perry Moore (2-16) was asked to utilise, his experience which he did as he took two quick wickets reducing Falkland to 156 for 9.

A last wicket stand of 30 help Falkland post a respectable score as G Afridi (30 not out) and R Polepeddi (11 not out) threw caution to the wind and attacked every deliver, helped by some sloppy Thatcham fielding, taking the Falkland final score to 186 for 9.

Thatcham’s response started poorly as both openers fell as the score crawled to 2 however Simon Gale and Simon Lewis repaired the damage with a stand of 103 in 18 overs. Both batsmen looked in sublime form as they accumulated runs with ease. Gale finally fell for 29 striking a need perfect mid-wicket shot, it’s only flaw it remained aerial long for G Afridi to throw out an outstretched hand and hang onto a near impossible one handed diving catch.

Falkland sensed a glimmer of victory as 105 for 3 became 106 for 4 however skipper Bird joined Lewis, who was quietly going about his business without incident, at the wicket and they put the record straight as they amassed 72 runs in the next 9 overs, taking the score to within 9 of the Falkland total before a tired Simon Lewis fell for a superb 103 to the re-introduced G Afridi.

The wicket of Lewis gave Falkland a second wind as G Afridi added another two wickets to his tally in the same over, reducing Thatcham from 178 for 4 to 182 for 7. The sudden change of fortune had the Falkland players thinking of the unlikely, but Skipper Bird (33 not out) was not fazed, as with many Thatcham players old and present, he’d seen this stutter many times before. McKenzie came to the wicket and along with skipper Bird eased Thatcham to their well-deserved victory without further incident.
