Thatcham 2nd XI repeated the double over Yateley 2nd XI for the second year running as they recovered from some early batting scares to chase down
Yateley’s low total of 138.

Earlier in the day Thatcham had elected to field and with a 4 man bowling line-up and very short leg side boundary Skipper Bird looked to his bowlers to provide him with the type of accuracy usually not seen at Brownsfield every week but Thatcham’s opening pair hadn’t read the script as the Yateley openers of Soames (13) and Maxfield (20) plundered 24 runs off the first four overs.

Fortunately the early damage was quickly repaired by O’Flynn and Denton-Powell (0-19) as the pair discovered the required length, halting Yateley’s charge and, by the time Denton-Powell spell was curtailed by the young fast bowler’s directive, the score had reached 37 for 1 from 12 overs.

O’Flynn was joined by Simon Lewis who provided Mahoneyesk control, which complemented O’Flynn’s fine spell of sometimes unplayable seam bowling at the other end. Wickets and runs became hard to come by as Yateley’s watchful batsmen took little chance against O’Flynn and Lewis as they ambled to 70 for 2 from 23 overs.

Feeling a change was due Skipper Bird replaced the tiring O’Flynn with Perry Moore and once lines and lengths had been calibrated the new combination proved to be Thatcham’s talisman as over the next 18 overs they restricted Yateley to 49 runs but crucially removing 4 of the away side’s batsman. Yateley’s number 4 D Bone (45) sensed urgency and began to look to strike big against the seaming, swinging, spinning wobble of Moore but fell 5 runs short of his half century to a fine low catch by O’Flynn.

O’Flynn returned to help Moore mop up the tail removing Barrett for 4 and ending with figures of 3 for 44 from 15.5 overs but not before Moore took his 4th wicket in 4 overs to claim his second 5 wicket haul of the season, ending with figures of 5 for 37 from 12 overs leaving Thatcham a low 138 runs to chase.
Unbeknown to Thatcham their very long batting line-up was going to be needed as the top order struggled to make any inroads into the Yateley total with the first 5 wickets falling for 33 runs within the first 20 overs.

Nevertheless Jamie Young, returning from a somewhat blurry two week holiday in Magaluf, applied himself superbly, and with Michael Hobbs managed to add some stability to the innings. When Hobbs (7) fell with the score on 71 Thatcham were once again required to rethink their game plan.

The incoming O’Flynn, delighted from his bowling exploits, helped boost
Thatcham’s resolve in a stand of 59 as Yateley tried to gain the initiative with continuous bowling changes and not even the returning N Burger, who’d earlier in the day finished his first 6 over spell with figures of 3 for 6 could prevent Young and O’Flynn finishing the job for Thatcham, Young finally finishing with 66 not out and O’Flynn 35 not out, as they gained Thatcham 20 hard fought points.
